Ukrainian Remembrance Day Ceremony 2025: A Powerful Tribute to Courage and Resistance

On May 8, 2025, the National Military Cemetery of Canada at Beechwood stood in solemn reflection as we marked the Day of Remembrance and Victory over Nazism in World War II. In partnership with the Embassy of Ukraine in Canada and the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, this annual commemoration brought together diplomats, military leaders, veterans, and community members to honour both historical sacrifice and present-day resilience.

The ceremony began with a heartfelt welcome in both English and French and an important land acknowledgment, recognizing that the gathering was taking place on the unceded territory of the Algonquin people. Jillian Turman’s stirring performance of the Ukrainian national anthem brought the audience to their feet, setting the tone for a deeply emotional event.

Nick McCarthy, Director of Marketing, Communications and Community Outreach at Beechwood Cemetery, served as Master of Ceremonies. In his remarks, he emphasized the significance of May 8 as a global moment of reflection for those who fought against Nazism. He underscored Beechwood’s long-standing relationship with the Ukrainian community and praised the enduring courage of the Ukrainian people, past and present. He spoke of the sacrifices made not only during the Second World War but also by those defending democracy and sovereignty today, reminding the audience that “freedom is never free—and the defence of one’s homeland, language, and values demands extraordinary sacrifice.

Her Excellency Yuliya Kovaliv, Ambassador of Ukraine to Canada, delivered powerful words about the cost of war, the will of her nation, and the unbroken spirit of Ukrainians both on the front lines and across the globe. She spoke of the enduring importance of remembrance, stating that “we honoured the memory of the millions who perished, remembered the Ukrainian soldiers who fought as part of the anti-Hitler coalition, and expressed our gratitude to those who continue to defend Europe’s freedom on the frontlines in Ukraine today.” Her message served as a poignant reminder that history is not only to be remembered but actively defended in our time. Her Excellency’s remarks drew a direct line from the sacrifice of the past to the courage and determination of Ukrainians standing for sovereignty and democracy today.

Her remarks were followed by a message from Ihor Michalchyshyn, CEO and Executive Director of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, who reflected on the significance of remembrance and unity within Canada’s Ukrainian community.

Lieutenant-General Michael Wright, Commander of the Canadian Army, represented the Canadian Armed Forces and spoke to the deep military cooperation and solidarity between Canada and Ukraine. His presence reaffirmed the commitment shared between both nations in defending freedom and the rule of law.

The crowd stood in silence as the Last Post was played, followed by a moment of quiet reflection, the Rouse, and the Lament.

Taras Jakiv of the Ukrainian War Veterans Association of Canada then delivered the Act of Remembrance in both official languages, echoing the commitment that “we shall remember them.”

A solemn wreath-laying ceremony followed, with representatives placing tributes on behalf of Canada, Ukraine, the Canadian Armed Forces, war veterans, the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, the Ottawa Service Attachés Committee, and faith communities.

This act of remembrance symbolized the unity of nations and organizations in standing together against tyranny, both in history and today. Father Taras Kinash of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church then led the assembled guests in a moment of prayer, offering spiritual comfort and honouring the memory of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

To conclude the formal program, attendees once again rose for the Canadian national anthem, performed by Jillian Turman, bringing the ceremony full circle—from past remembrance to present-day commitment.

In closing remarks, McCarthy offered a final reflection: “The war in Ukraine is more than a war—it is a defining moment for freedom in the 21st century. In standing with Ukraine, we honour courage, defend liberty, and reaffirm the enduring power of a free people determined to write their own future.

The Ukrainian Embassy, the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, and Beechwood Cemetery extend their sincere thanks to all who attended and participated. Together, we honoured the past, stood in solidarity with the present, and committed ourselves to a future shaped by peace, dignity, and freedom. Slava Ukraini.
