Honouring the Legacy of the RCMP Aviation Section: A Tribute to “Air” Division
On November 9, 2024, the RCMP National Memorial Cemetery at Beechwood welcomed dignitaries, veterans, and community members to a special ceremony celebrating the legacy of the RCMP Aviation Section, known as the “Air” Division. This division, which has provided essential services to Canadians for over 80 years, holds a significant place in the history of the RCMP and Canada.
The Beginnings of RCMP Aviation
On April 1, 1937, after years of collaboration with the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) in anti-smuggling surveillance, northern and regional patrols, search and rescue missions, and transport of personnel, prisoners, and supplies, RCMP Commissioner Sir James MacBrien established the Aviation Section. This inaugural team comprised six RCMP officers who served as pilots and a modest fleet of four DeHavilland ‘Dragonfly’ aircraft. These pioneers laid the foundation for what would become an indispensable branch of the RCMP.
Wartime Contributions and Post-War Growth
The outbreak of the Second World War in 1939 saw the RCMP transfer most of its aircraft and crews to the RCAF to support the war effort. Following the war, the RCMP Aviation Section was reestablished with a fleet of four aircraft stationed at three locations across Canada, including a mobile detachment.
Over the ensuing decades, the RCMP's fleet expanded to meet evolving demands. By 1971, the Aviation Section introduced its first helicopter, adding to a growing roster of turbine-powered aircraft that enhanced the division's capabilities.
A Legacy of Dedication and Sacrifice
For more than 80 years, RCMP Air Services have carried out critical operations in some of the most remote and challenging locations across Canada. The men and women of this division have exemplified courage, dedication, and resilience. Tragically, some have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to Canada, and their contributions will never be forgotten.
The Modern RCMP Air Services Fleet
Today, the RCMP Aviation Section operates 31 modern aircraft from 19 strategically located air sections across the country. This vast operation is supported by a skilled team of over 180 pilots, tactical flight officers, flight coordinators, and aircraft maintenance engineers, ensuring that the division remains ready to meet the nation’s needs.
Commemorating the Past, Celebrating the Present
The ceremony featured the unveiling of a commemorative plaque honouring the RCMP Aviation Section's history and achievements. Madame Ginette Petitpas Taylor, Minister of Veterans Affairs Canada; RCMP Commissioner Mike Duheme; RCAF Lieutenant-Colonel Comeau, who also offered congratulations to the Royal Canadian Air Force on its 100th anniversary this year; Mr. Roch Séguin, current Director-General of RCMP Air Services; and Louisa Russo-Lemay, 1st Vice-President of the RCMP Veterans Association – Ottawa Division and former Director-General of RCMP Air Services, participated in this meaningful moment.
Reflecting on a Proud Tradition
The RCMP National Memorial Cemetery at Beechwood provided a fitting venue to celebrate the incredible legacy of the RCMP Aviation Section. As the division continues to evolve and adapt, it remains a vital part of Canada's national security and public safety framework. Beechwood Cemetery is honoured to recognize the service and sacrifices of the RCMP’s “Air” Division and its contributions to Canada’s history. This tribute not only celebrates their achievements but also ensures that their stories inspire future generations.
