Honouring Dedication: The RCMP Long Service Medal

On November 9, 2024, the RCMP National Memorial Cemetery at Beechwood hosted a ceremony to honour the legacy of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Long Service Medal, a distinction that celebrates the unwavering commitment and good conduct of RCMP members. The event brought together dignitaries, veterans, and members of the RCMP community to reflect on the medal’s storied history and significance.

A Legacy of Service and Good Conduct

The RCMP Long Service Medal is not only the oldest continually awarded honour in the Canadian honours system but also the first medal created specifically for Canadian service within Canada. Its roots connect modern-day RCMP Regular Members to the founders of the Force, underscoring a tradition of excellence and integrity.

Approved by King George V on March 6, 1934, the medal may be awarded to any Officer, Non-Commissioned Officer, or Constable who has completed at least 20 years of service with good conduct and is of “irreproachable character.” Over the past 90 years, this medal has been a symbol of pride, worn on the chests of RCMP members whose actions and dedication during their careers exemplify the highest standards of the Force.

Unveiling the Plaque

As part of the ceremony, a commemorative plaque was unveiled to celebrate the history and meaning of the RCMP Long Service Medal. Participating in the unveiling were Madame Ginette Petitpas Taylor, Minister of Veterans Affairs Canada, RCMP Commissioner Mike Duheme, Madame Paula Tiszai, representing the RCMP Honours & Recognition Policy Centre, Wayne Jacquard and President of the RCMP Veterans Association – Ottawa Division

Their involvement reflected the significance of this honour within both the RCMP and the broader Canadian community.

The Medal’s Design and Symbolism

The RCMP Long Service Medal is distinct in its appearance and steeped in meaning. The medal’s obverse features the image of the reigning monarch, a tradition that has evolved with each Sovereign. Surrounding this image is the inscription acknowledging the RCMP's long-standing service. The reverse depicts a buffalo head encircled by the words “Gendarmerie Royale du Canada – Royal Canadian Mounted Police,” emphasizing the Force’s heritage and connection to Canada. The ribbon, in the Force's signature colours of scarlet and blue, is a proud symbol of the RCMP's identity. Recipients who continue to serve may also be eligible for bars representing additional 5-year periods of service, further showcasing their enduring dedication.

Celebrating a Proud Tradition

The RCMP Long Service Medal stands as a testament to the professionalism, commitment, and good conduct of the men and women of the Force. It reflects not only their individual contributions but also the values and traditions that have defined the RCMP for generations.

A Reflection on Dedication

The RCMP National Memorial Cemetery at Beechwood provided a fitting backdrop for this tribute to service and excellence. As the RCMP approaches its 150th anniversary, honours like the Long Service Medal remind us of the enduring legacy of the Force and the dedication of those who have served under its banner.
