Beechwood: A Proud Canadian Legacy Since 1873
Beechwood Cemetery is more than just a final resting place—it is an enduring part of Canada’s identity. Founded in 1873, just six years after Confederation, Beechwood has been deeply woven into the fabric of our nation’s history. As Canada’s National Cemetery, it has stood as a place of remembrance, reflection, and pride for over 150 years, honouring those who built, served, and shaped this great country.
From the earliest days of our nation, Beechwood has been entrusted with preserving the legacy of Canadians from all walks of life. It is the final resting place of Fathers of Confederation, military heroes, pioneering visionaries, and everyday citizens who contributed to the growth and success of Canada.
Before the Royal Canadian Mounted Police rode west, before the last spike was driven into the transcontinental railway, before Alberta and Saskatchewan became provinces, Beechwood was already serving as the nation’s cemetery. Beechwood has borne witness to Canada’s evolution.
From the days of the Red Ensign to the adoption of the Maple Leaf, through times of war and peace, prosperity and challenge, it has remained a steadfast place of national significance. Each stone, each name, and each monument tells a story of resilience, service, and commitment to this country.
It is here that we honour the sacrifice of Canada’s Armed Forces, with the National Military Cemetery standing as a testament to those who wore the uniform and dedicated their lives to defending our values and freedoms.
Respects the traditions and community that is found in the RCMP, and celebrate its legacy within the RCMP National Memorial Cemetery. In addition to honouring Canada’s military, Beechwood is home to the Ottawa Police Service Memorial Cemetery, where members of the Ottawa Police Service are laid to rest with dignity and respect. It also houses the CSIS Memorial Cemetery, a solemn space dedicated to those who served in Canada’s intelligence community, protecting our nation from threats both foreign and domestic.
These specialized sections further reinforce Beechwood’s role as a guardian of Canada’s history, ensuring that those who serve in various capacities are remembered appropriately.
Beyond its historical significance, Beechwood continues to be a living part of Canada’s story. It is a place where families gather to pay tribute, where Canadians come to reflect, and where history is preserved for future generations. The cemetery’s beauty—its sprawling landscapes, its majestic trees, its peaceful paths—reflects the very essence of the nation it represents. It is a place that embodies the spirit of Canada: strong, enduring, and deeply rooted in its past.
Being 100% Canadian since 1873 is more than just a statement—it is a commitment to ensuring that the stories of this country and its people are never forgotten. Beechwood is not just where Canada remembers; it is where Canada lives on. Through commemorations, public programs, and historical preservation, the cemetery remains an essential part of the national narrative, ensuring that the legacy of those who came before us is honoured with dignity and respect.
As Canada’s National Cemetery, Beechwood is a symbol of our shared history, our collective memory, and our national pride. Recognized by Parliament, this designation reflects our commitment to honouring all Canadians, regardless of background, service, or sacrifice. It is a place that connects the past with the present and the future, reminding us all of the contributions and sacrifices that have shaped our country.
In its quiet beauty and solemn dignity, Beechwood continues to stand as a proud Canadian institution—one that has been here since the earliest days of our nation and will continue to serve generations to come.
