Passed away from effects of a stroke Sunday, April 6, 2025. Born August 16, 1939 in Pyrgos, Samos, Greece. Emigrated to New York, New York July 10, 1946. Attended New York City public schools (P.S. 51 and P.S. 17), George Washington High School and the City College of New York (B.Sc. 1960), the University of Michigan (M.Sc. 1962) and Carleton University (M.S.W. 1975). Began the Cyto-Genetics Lab at Columbia University (1962). Taught at CCNY (1963), Yeshiva University (1966), University of Illinois (Chicago Circle Campus) (1968), and the University of Ottawa Medical School. Worked in the Department of Social Work at the Ottawa Civic Hospital (1977-2004).

Zoë had a broad range of interests including sewing, cooking, community food advice, recycling and international affairs. Enjoyed the music of Nana Mouskouri and Gordon Lightfoot. Loved spending time with her three children and grandchildren and remembered trips to Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, London, Paris, Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing and her beloved Greece. However, it was the great city she grew up in - New York, New York – that gripped her imagination and forever left its imprint on her speech, outlook and soaring ambitions.

Zoë is survived by her son Chios Carmody of London, Ontario; daughter Daphne Carmody of Ottawa; and son Ian Carmody (Chrissy) of New Orleans; as well as her grandchildren Caroline and Grace Carmody and Zoë Evangeline Carmody.

A gathering in celebration of Zoë’s life will take place at Beechwood Cemetery, 280 Beechwood Ave., Ottawa on Friday June 20, 2025 at 1 p.m.. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in the memory of Zoë Chios Carmody to The Foundation for City College (https://www.ccny.cuny.edu/giving) and the Ottawa Public Library (https://biblioottawalibrary.ca/en/support-library) where she spent many happy hours.

I will always remember the Chinese meal that she cooked from scratch , when she was living in Columbia University housing. Good memories always.
