Sam the Gorf, Papi, and Post One
It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden death of Yvon (Sam) loving husband of LOIS for almost 49 years, beloved "Papi" of Darlene and Dad to Kevin (Donna). A loving Grandpa to Dana and Dexter. Predeceased by his father Adélard, his mother Lydia, his brother Gilles and his sister-in-law Therese, and brother Michel (Ida). He leaves in mourning his brother Jacques (Raymonde) and his sister Ginette (Graham). He leaves behind many-in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Sam travelled this Country far and wide with the Armed Forces, he proudly served for 33 years. His career took him to a United Nations 9 month tour in the Congo in the 1960's, Quebec City, Inuvik NWT, Bermuda, Kingston, Gander NL, Masset BC, Washington DC, many tours at Alert NWT, and finally for the past 30 plus years, Ottawa. When he retired, he joined the Commissionaires and served for nearly 18 years at the Supreme Court as a Supervisor.
Private cremation has taken place. A Celebration of his fabulous life will be held at Beechwood National Military Cemetery 280 Beechwood Avenue Ottawa, on Saturday April 8, 2023 from 12:00pm to 2:00pm. Words of Remembrance will be shared at 1:00pm.

The members of the Canadian Forces Supplementary Radio (SUPRAD) System Oldtimers Association were deeply saddened by the news of Sam's passing. During Sam's distinguished 33 year military career, all those who proudly served with him will forever cherish the memories of all the enjoyable times that were shared. Even though we knew and worked with Sam for many, many years, no one ever called him by his real name, Yvon. Probably because we always knew him as Sam, and did not even know that his real name was Yvon. Sam's friendship was genuine, and he could always be counted upon if you needed someone to listen. Sam truly valued the many good friendships that he made while serving in the SUPRAD community. He valued them so much, that he became a Life Member of our Oldtimers Association. There is a Tree of Life in the entranceway of the Canadian Forces Station Leitrim All Ranks Mess. Because Sam was a loved and valued member of our Association, a small bronze cross will now be placed on the leaf that bears his name. Please know that as members of your extended military family, we will be keeping you in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Sam sure is was a man of integrity, love and kindness. Truly selfless man.
Lois and Sam cared for me and my children when I broke my leg. Sam would rush over and drive my daughter to dance classes
etc. He was always there for our family.
Sam made the best of the best meat pies and fisherman’s lasagna.
Oh and how he would shine when he spoke of Lois.
I am very sad that Sam has passed. I am comforted knowing that he is in heaven and looking down with pride on his family.

I first met Sam in Gloucester, Ottawa, back in the late 60s then in Inuvik in the 70s. Really got to know him and his lovely family , Lois, Darlene and Kevin when Huguette and I were posted to Bermuda in 1978. What great sponsors you two were for us in this new and lovely environment. We kept in touch and stayed friends over the years whether posted to the same places or not and further throughout my many years as a retiree. I am so glad we stopped at your place last June on our way back home from Ottawa. Glad that we got to talk with you in person not knowing this would be the last time. So sorry to see you go Sam, you were a true friend, loyal and so pleasant to spend time with. You will leave a big void in our circle of friends . Repose en paix cher Yvon.

My dad has a lot of health challenges in the past year. He went to the dialysis clinic three days a week . He ended up sort of enjoying the “ torture chamber “ as he called it. The nurses loved him, and he would say “ it’s Xmas Eve, can I get off early?” We shared a special bond, we laughed at each others jokes, found the same things funny. he would always tease me about how I wouldn’t eat his fisherman’s lasagna, his curry boiled eggs, or sam’s baked beans. We texted each other the the breaking news, as we were both news junkies. We always tried to be the first to tell the other what was going on in the world. We also tried to text in Spanish to each other. He loved his grand cats and affectionately dubbed himself “ grand PAW Meow” He was curious to compare his creatine levels with my cat mocha, as she had kidney failure as well. yesterday, we saw him for the last time. We placed roses ,his beloved newspaper that he didn’t get to read , and the Valentine’s Day card that his beloved “ Mommydoo “ gave him. He passed away on Valentine’s Day, a day that he loved and always had flowers and a card for my mom. This year, they had celebrated it on Saturday together. My dad was a planner and wrote his own obituary. I just fine tuned it. On a separate page he wrote his last words to us. “ I love you all and live your life the way you want. It has been a very good happy journey” Dad. Te amo siempre papi. Love from your Pretty pretty
