Terry passed away peacefully in hospital on New Year's Day, at the age of 78 following the diagnosis of an autoimmune disease in 2023. He leaves behind his “sweetheart” of 54 years, Sandra (Sandy), his devoted sister Joanne Benoit (Andrew Milakovic), sister-in-law Sylvie Sauve, brother-in-law Gary Payne and his loving nephew and Godson, Daniel Payne. He also leaves many friends and relatives. Terry was predeceased by his parents Joe and Gen Benoit, his brother Mike, and by close friends who left their mark on him.
Terry began his career with the Met Life and left in the late 70’s to pursue another with the RCMP/CISIS where he retired in 2003. Sports was always a big part of his life, with curling and golf taking centre stage as early as his mid-20’s. As a member of the Ottawa Curling Club and the Rideau View Golf Club, he excelled at both sports, especially in the earlier years. A highlight for Terry was a golf-and-bridge trip to Myrtle Beach for 20 years and where new friendships were formed.
But where Terry truly shined and where his deep passion lied is when he was cooking. He loved nothing more than preparing 4-5 course dinners for friends and family. Entertainment was a big part of Terry and Sandy’s lives in their home of 52 years. What they also shared is their love of traveling to several countries. He was happy to say he had completed his bucket list. Terry was also an avid reader and he never backed down from a challenge. He was to many a generous and giving person.
And finally, the family would like to express their deep appreciation to Lise and JF Boisclair, whose long daily hospital visits were comforting and so appreciated; they are indeed our earth angels who also accompanied Terry to many medical appointments.
Donations in Terry’s memory can be made to the Ottawa Mission. Online condolences and tributes can be sent via Beechwood's website at www.beechwoodottawa.ca. A reception will take place in the Spring. Details to be announced later on the Beechwood's website.
Sandy, I offer my condolences for the passing of Terry. The two of you have opened your house to me on a few occasions and I truly appreciated your warm hospitality and Terry's amazing 5-course meals. He was a gifted chef. I remember him fondly. Nicole
