Wayne Anthony Wilson, 52, of Orleans, died unexpectedly at home last month. Wayne was born in Port Antonio, Jamaica on Aug. 13, 1970, the eldest son of the late Vereta and Sexon Wilson. He is survived by his daughter Camara Wilson and son Ethan Wilson, both of Orleans, and by three brothers, Jason, Rodrick and Matthew, and one sister, Charmaine. He is also survived by Patricia Urquhart, the mother of his children.

Wayne was a proud, and beloved, member of the Ottawa Police Service and worked in a variety of roles since joining the force in 1997. He worked frontline patrol on Platoon B before discovering his true calling in community policing, which allowed his outgoing personality and love of people to really shine.

From community policing, Wayne went through the promotional process and went back to his roots on B Platoon as a sergeant.

Wayne truly loved working with his brothers and sisters in blue, but his two beautiful children, Camara and Ethan, were his true loves. Both children inherited his passion for football. A gifted and natural athlete himself, Wayne absolutely loved watching his kids play sports and excelling at everything they did.

Anyone who met Wayne knows that his smile could light up a room – a room that he would usually have in stitches in short order. He loved to entertain people and make them laugh. There were always big laughs when Wayne was around.

But sadly, police officers often see people at their worst, and that can be a tough burden to carry. Wayne struggled with the heaviness of life, for even the funniest people can be broken – making people smile and laugh while secretly struggling themselves.

Wayne will be remembered for his infectious, thousand-watt smile, that unforgettable laugh, and always trying to make others laugh. And he will never be forgotten by all those whose lives he touched in his 52 years.

Visitation will be held at Beechwood, Funeral, Cemetery and Cremation Services, 280 Beechwood Avenue, Ottawa, on Thursday, July 6 from 10 a.m., with the service to follow at 1 p.m. in Beechwood’s Sacred Space.

My family would like to pass on our deepest condolences to Wayne's family during this very difficult time.

On a personal note I had the great pleasure of going to Ontario Police College with Wayne. I was there with Toronto Police Service and our mutual friend and Wayne's colleague Mark Kilby introduced me to Wayne. Wayne even came to my house for graduation celebration and we had a great time with our fellow classmates. I would see Wayne when I would visit Ottawa or at least get an update from Mark as to how he was doing.

I will always remember how welcoming he was to me, his sense of humour and that million dollar smile.

Rest in Peace brother, you will be truly missed.

I worked with Wayne at OPS, he truly was a great man. Such a happy positive person to be around. His smile and positive nature was infectious. I will not forget him.

My Dearest Wayne,

You are finally at ease and that brings me some comfort.

To Wayne’s family, please know he was truly the best police officer who always put others before himself. We started working together out of the Blair Road station, and ended together as supervisors on the same platoon in East Division. These years were the best, and it’s because of Wayne.

Camara and Ethan, he was so proud of your accomplishments and loved you endlessly.
