It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Sandra Lockman on December 30, 2025, at the age of 57.

Sandra will be deeply and forever missed by her beloved husband, Mark Kirkey; her children, Alexa (Christopher) and Jeremy (Maude), and her loyal dog, Jasper. She will also be lovingly remembered by her sister Susan (Grant), her brother Michael (Carolyn), her father Maurice, extended family, and many friends whose lives she touched. Sandra was predeceased by her mother, Thérèse.

Sandra will be remembered for her strength, her warmth, and the love she had for her family. She approached life with resilience and grace, and her presence will forever be felt in the hearts of those who loved her.

A celebration of Sandra’s life will be held at Beechwood Funeral, Cemetery and Cremation Services, located at 280 Beechwood Avenue, Ottawa on Sunday, January 11 from 1 to 4 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Sandra’s memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. The family would also like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate doctors, nurses, and staff at The Ottawa Hospital for their care and kindness.

We don't know each other... Sandra and I went to primary school (we played together after school at her house where Mme Lockman greeted us with kindness) and also high school. Unfortunately we lost track as I married a military member and moved away. I would like to send my sincere condolences. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. God Bless✝️. We were so saddened to hear of Sandra's passing. Our family had the privilege of joining the Kirkey family when our son Chris, married their daughter Alexa. We only wish we could have spent more time with Sandra. She was always welcoming, kind and warm to talk to and had a great laugh. Our deepest condolences to Mark, Jeremy and Maude, Alexa and Chris, Maurice and all other family members at this difficult time.

I am deeply saddened by the loss of Sandra, a colleague I had the privilege of working with at Avalon Public School. From the very beginning, I admired her poise, calmness, and dedication. In September 2019, we became teaching partners. She returning after a short break and me returning to the primary grades. She was incredibly effective, organized, and committed, even while she was still sick. Like others have shared, she never let her illness define her. She kept things private and remained a true professional in every sense.
I have always believed that teachers become a kind of extended family. Often, shared challenges bind us together for life, and friendships grow from that. That is certainly what happened for Sandra and me. When COVID hit in March 2020 and we famously “pivoted” to the virtual world, we became a support system for one another for the remainder of that school year. Through that time, I came to appreciate her wonderful sense of humour, her occasional colourful language (which we both shared!), and her ability to bring lightness even in difficult moments. She even introduced me to Pink Whitney, and we shared a few virtual 5 à 7s along the way or perhaps they were 3 à 5s but either way, we enjoyed a drink or two together.
She always spoke so highly of her family. Please know, Mark, Alexa and Jeremy that you were deeply loved and often spoken of with pride. I also loved hearing stories about Jasper, her beloved dog. Sandra was a remarkable person, and she will be remembered with great respect and affection by all who knew her.
Mes sincères condoléances!💐

Dear Mark, Alexa and Jeremy.
There is little in life that will ever compare to a mother's love - your mother's love.
The support and love which she offered you, you then offered her.
She was gentle and strong... quiet and forceful... brave and loving.
I met Sandra first when I taught in the portable village at Avalon.
Our paths rarely crossed but her reputation as a wonderful teacher rang through the halls.
Later our paths crossed as she began to decrease her teaching load.
She will be remembered with fondness.
Your memories of her are the most cherished and the ones she cherished most.
My heartfelt sympathies and prayers.

Our deepest condolences for your loss of Sandra. We remember Sandra from hockey parties, and several of them hosted at Mark and Sandra’s home in Orleans. Sandra was always lovely and welcoming. May she rest in peace.
