Ronald Arthur Welke passed peacefully on Monday, March 28, 2022 at Ottawa Hospital.  He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Barbara, and their three adult children; Gordon (Leona), Cal (Katienne) and Carla. He is also survived by his brothers-in-law Bill Shaw (Patricia), Larry Shaw (Lynn), his sister-in-law Jean Welke, and six nieces and nephews and their children in Alberta and British Columbia.

Ron was predeceased by his parents, Arthur and Hilda Welke, and his brother Donald, (RCMP Sgt., Reg., #24428) who passed on December 6, 2021.

Ron was born on the front porch of his parents' home in Marchwell, Saskatchewan on September 20, 1940.  He joined the RCMP in 1959.  He had a full and accomplished career serving in three separate Divisions, "A", "K" and "E" and at National Headquarters in Ottawa.  He retired at the rank of Chief Superintendent in 1994 as the Director General of the Access to Information and Privacy (ATIP) Division.

After retiring from the Force, Ron worked as contractor in the access to information realm.  He had many interests and was a talented wood worker who mastered the art of the scroll saw.  He had a lifelong passion for curling, was an avid curler himself and served as President of the RCMP Curling Club in Ottawa for three separate terms.  RCMP Long Island Camp was a favourite family destination during the summer for many years and Ron loved to play & compete in bocce ball with all takers.  Ron and Barbara attended St. David and St. Martin Presbyterian Church together in Ottawa for many years.

One of the recent highlights of his life was enjoying the company of many of his troop mates for a 60th anniversary reunion in 2019 aboard a cruise ship transiting the western coast of B.C. up to the region of Alaska.  His brother Donald also participated in this cruise and it was very special memory for the two of them.

A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, May 30th at St David and St Martin Presbyterian Church at 11:00am.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks you to consider a donation to the Kidney Foundation of Canada.

Interment shall take place at the RCMP National Memorial Cemetery at Beechwood at a later date.

Ron was a wonderful brother-in-law whom we will dearly miss. We appreciated his sincere, kind and generous spirit, and enjoyed his sense of humour and joyful laugh. His special love for Barb and his family was always evident. His service to his Country as a member of the R.C.M.P demonstrated Ron’s desire to serve and to protect others as he did his family. Rest in Glory, Ron. We love you.

Dear Carla and Family, Please embrace my most heartfelt condolences for your loss of Dad. Know that you’re in my thoughts during this time of loss and remembrance. There are no words at this time of your journey that will ease your pain. Time is the healer that will hold your hand and guide you forward.

Ron was a fellow 1959 RCMP troop training member when we first met in Regina. We enjoyed each other's company and shared our respective historical career challenges and highlights. Later we worked together helping to organize our troop retirement reunions. It was memorable to have Ron ad his brother together attended our last 2019 reunion cruising to Alaska. We shared many memories; great stories and enjoyed many laughs together. He was a well respected individual and member and will be missed. Our deepest condolences to Barb and family.

Dad IS and will always be my Hero! Same goes for my Mom. So I must say that Dad was dearly loved and deeply respected by literally every one of my lifelong friends (atleast 15+). This was no small feat because my friends were one and all uniquely gifted, talented and well, very different from each other. Each and every one of my friends loved me unconditionally and stuck by me through my "thick and thin" moments in my life. Dad and Mom truly loved my friends and they always made each and every one of them totally and always welcomed. I have had so many failures and short comings throughout my life and it had gotten to point where I couldn't face anyone any more.

Mom and Dad love me unconditionally. Both Mom and Dad believed in me which is incredibly evident when you look at both my younger years and even the most recent past three decades.
My Mom and Dad adopted me as just a tiny infant and when I was told this as a young boy, Mom and Dad made me feel like the most special little guy in the entire world! Mom and Dad provided the most loving, safe, comfortable, proud and nurturing life that are stuff that dreams are made of. I felt so proud to be their Son and this was matched with how safe I felt.
After my Father passed I sat down and started to write a list of "thank you" messages for specific things and moments
that I could remember. I started with specific memories of Dad but I quickly realized that most of these wonderful memories also included my Mother.
Alas I shall complete this memories list but, it has quickly moved from a list to a 7 page document so far with no end in sight and many more pages to come

Thank you Dad for being the best Father any child could ever hope and pray for.
Both my Mother and Father never once abandoned me, even as an adult hitting all time lows in my life.
I love you Dad and I will see you on the other side.

Love Forever and Ever Amen
Your Son Gordon

Condolences to the Welke family. I had the pleasure of working with Ron in Headquarters and enjoyed his professionalism and easy going manner. He was an outstanding person and we will miss him at our « old fossils luncheons ». God Bless you and your family.

My old friend (actually younger by one month), decided it was time to say good-bye. Bev and I and our three children met the Welke's at Long Island Camp in 1978. Ron & Barb have remained very good friends all these years. Perhaps Ron will now have a chance to say hello again to my wife Beverlee who has been waiting since 2007.

Lovingly, Arnold & Elaine, Treacy, Jennifer and Melanie
