Robert ‘Ken’ McConkey passed away on January 16th, 10 days short of his 95th birthday. Ken was husband of 65 years to Rita and father to Cathy (Bruce) and Rob (Glenda). Known as ‘Popa’ to his grandkids Heather (John), Emily, Alexandra, Angus, Caelan, and his adored great-grandkids, Remi, Beatrix and John Owen.

Born in Winnipeg, Ken graduated from Gordon Bell HS and after a brief military service, he joined the RCMP. He retired as a corporal 21 years later and built a successful property management company which he continued to run until his final days.

Many thanks to the caregivers at Rideau 2 South, Perley Health for their care and compassion. Donations can be made to Perley Health Foundation.  A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Ken enjoyed reading books on military history and anthropology and watching old movies like Casablanca.

“Here’s looking at you kid.”

My dad and Ken were occasional drinking buddies back in the day and I came to know him as a an astute investor and landlord/neighbour for many years. My sincere condolences to his family.

We remember fondly many meals together when Al and Wanda came to town. Ken loved sharing his favourite Ottawa eating spots with others and there was always a sense of excitement, fun and solid friendship when Al and Ken and Rita and Wanda got together. Ken’s generosity, devotion to his family and fun loving spirit will remain with us always. Our deepest condolences to Rita, Cathy, Rob and the whole family.

What a wonderful picture of Ken. It captures his impish spirit so well! I always so enjoyed his visits with us at Low Murchison and the stories he would regale us with. My sympathies to you, Rita, and to your family on Ken’s passing. Ken enjoyed a long life, and it was a life well lived.
