Monique Cronier (née Breton), beloved wife, mother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on the evening of May 2, 2025, in Ottawa at the age of 82, after a prolonged illness—leaving a space in our hearts that can never be filled.
Monique was the cherished wife of her devoted husband, Roméo Cronier, with who she enjoyed a dedicated marriage of 56 years, and who gave Monique exceptional care and devotion through the toughest years of her illness. Monique’s family and friends will be forever grateful to Roméo for the depth of care, compassion, and love he showed Monique throughout their marriage—especially in her final years. His quiet strength and unwavering support were a gift beyond measure.
She was a loving and devoted mother to her adored son, Michel Cronier. One of the family’s favourite memories is how Monique lit up every time Michel walked into the room—even if she had just seen him the day before. From his childhood through adulthood, she simply loved having him nearby. Her love was fierce and wholehearted, her pride in him unmistakable—and he always knew it.
Monique was born in Ottawa in 1942 into the loving home of her parents, Leopold Breton and Laurette Breton (née Coté). In addition to Roméo and Michel, she is survived by her five younger siblings Louise (late Donald), Jocelyne (Robert), Gilles, Danielle (late Jean-Pierre) and Marc, and an absolute abundance of nieces, nephews, friends and extended family.
Monique had a successful career in the Federal Public Service before retiring in 1995. Before her health began to fail, she was able to create fond memories during her retirement: winters spent in Florida, wonderful cruises, and social events with family and friends too numerous to mention. Her family and friends take comfort in those memories now that Monique is at peace and free from her illnesses.
While Monique took special joy throughout her life in her wide circle of extended family and friends, at the centre of Monique’s heart were always, unrelentingly, her husband, Roméo, and son, Michel. They will never forget the love she brought to their lives.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, May 14, 2025 at 1:00 p.m. at Beechwood’s National Memorial Centre, 280 Beechwood Avenue, Ottawa, Ontario. A Memorial Service will follow at 2:00 p.m., followed by the inurnment and reception, also at Beechwood.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the University of Ottawa Heart Institute (GIVE | Heart Institute Foundation | Support life-changing heart care) in Monique’s name would be appreciated.
