It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Maria Plewik (née Choma 12/06/32) on March 13, 2025 at the CHSLD Nicolet in Montreal. Of Polish descent, she lived her youth through WWII, marrying Mieczyslaw Plewik (deceased), and emigrated to Canada in 1952 after the birth of their only daughter Paulina Mieczyslawa Plewik. She worked honorably as a seamstress for decades before retiring with her husband in her beloved Montreal district of Rosemont. Her legacy lives on in her daughter Paulina (Tom Brecher), grand-daughters Emily (Brian Lin) and Lauren (David Svaluto) and great-grand-children (Abby, Chloe, Ollie, Sofia, Teia).

She will also be lovingly remembered by her brother Marian (Marisha Choma), nieces (Diana and Yola) and their families.

Our deepest thanks go out to the caring staff in the long term care home CHSLD Nicolet in Montreal where she lived since 2013. Thanks to the many wonderful nurses, PSW’s and other support staff who provided her with a loving and secure environment over the last 12 years, treated her and us with respect and compassion. Maria enjoyed the company of her little community of fellow residents and being addressed in Polish, French and English.

Thanks also to her neighbours on 12th Avenue in Rosemount in particular Julie LeBlanc and Maxime Boisvert who assisted us by looking in on her and communicating with us after her husband`s death in 2006. It was a comfort and showed the solidarity of this neighbourhood.

Maria will be laid to rest alongside Mieczyslaw and their grandson Andrew at Beechwood Cemetery in Ottawa. The family will receive condolences at Beechwood National Memorial Centre, 280 Beechwood Avenue, Saturday, April 5th from 12:00 to 2 p.m. followed by a graveside service at 2 p.m. and a reception from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.

If inclined, you are encouraged to send a donation in lieu of flowers to The Alzheimer’s Society, or any cause in support of seniors.
