Fondly known as our “Pappou Loukas”, age 92, has entered into eternal rest after 2 ½ years of increasingly poor health. Blessed to have had two beautiful marriages during his life, Loukas was predeceased by his first wife Ioanna Reklitis (1935-1980) and his second wife Panagiota Pavlakos (1930-2020). Dear father of Demetrios (Penny), the late George, the late Theodore (Danielle), Mike (Katherine) and stepfather of Maria Tsarouhas (Kevin) and Michael Charouhas (Laurie). Cherished Pappou of Loucas, Yanni (Kristin), Nicholas, Ioanna (Nick), Marianna, Patti (Neil), Theodora (Tyler) and great-grandfather of Fiona and Georgia.
Loukas was born to Dimitrios and Theodora (nee Moutsatsos) on the Greek island of Aegina in 1929. As a young adult, he journeyed from Greece to make a better life in Canada. Life with our Pappou Loukas was always interesting; he enjoyed sharing stories of his youth in Greece and many adventures of his careers in Canada as a restauranteur, cook, taxi driver and banquet chef. Pappou Loukas’s loved ones were always well fed and entertained! Upon retirement, he began his ‘volunteering career’ as a devoted and honoured member of our church’s committee and parish council, an active member of the Senior Citizen’s and Laconian Associations and a tireless volunteer at Ottawa GreekFest for over 30 years. Loukas was a fixture at our Community’s Hike for CHEO fundraiser throughout its 25 years; first as expert barbequer and then as a walker (although he usually jogged it!), earning the annual eldest participant award several times.
Pappou Loukas’ family extends heartfelt thanks to Fr. Alex Michalopulos for his love & support; to our Aunt Gisele Reklitis for her unwavering daily assistance throughout both cheerful & challenging times; and to the many family and friends who kept in touch over the years.
Friends may pay respects at the Dormition of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church, 1315 Prince of Wales Drive in Ottawa on Tuesday, March 22nd from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The funeral service will begin at 12:00 p.m., followed by interment at Beechwood Cemetery. To livestream the funeral please follow this link: https://youtu.be/vY_m5eMzrDg
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Hellenic Community of Ottawa (for needs of the Greek Orthodox Church) in Pappou Loukas’ memory will be greatly appreciated. In the Donation Note, please indicate “In memory of Loukas Reklitis.”
