Katherine “Katie” Blotniuk passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 16, 2022 in Ottawa at the age of 90.

Born December 21, 1931 in Hungary, Katie grew up in Germany. She met and married William “Bill” Blotniuk in 1956 while he was stationed in Zweibruchen, Germany.  After she gave birth to their identical twin daughters, Bill was transferred back to Canada, quite an adjustment for Katie as she left her German family behind and had to start a new life in Canada including learning to speak English.

Katie didn’t know it at the time, but she was a trailblazer for women.  She was a working mom, building a career in the hospitality industry while also using her teaching credentials to help support the family.  She embraced risk and convinced Bill on a couple of occasions to invest in small businesses including a restaurant. Katie will be fondly remembered by all who visited the ELMVALE RESTAURANT that she and Bill owned for 18 years.  Katie’s home cooking attracted countless regular customers who became friends for life. She also spent several years as a substitute teacher for the Ottawa School Board and taught evening cooking classes at various high schools. Katie was a member of the Resurrection of Our Lord Church and contributed to many of their social and fundraising events.

Katie was a loving wife, mother and Oma. She is survived by her children, Carol (Jean-Luc Savoie) and Cathy (Dan Pickard), her grandchildren Jake (Jehan), Molly (Daniel), Kelly (Chris), Chet (Meghan) and Calvin (Courtney) along with 10 precious great grandchildren.  She is also survived by several members of her German family. Katie was preceded in death by her husband Bill.

The family thanks the staff at Perley Health for the special care and compassion given to their mother and are grateful to Father Paul for his friendship and support to her over the years.

A celebration of Katie’s life will take place at a future date.

In memory of Katie please consider a donation to either the Dementia Society of Ottawa or the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation.

Finally, a call or visit with Mom/Oma always ended with “Ich liebe dich” – I love you.  So Mom/Oma, Ich liebe dich.

Your mom was an integral part of my childhood, being next door neighbours. She was a huge inspiration to my mom and helped her through many life challenges.

She left her mark on this world and impacted many people. I'm sorry for your loss
