John was always very welcoming at the Association of Canadian Archivists (ACA) conferences, and it was clear that he was passionate about acquiring, preserving, and providing access to the stories of everyone who calls Ottawa and Canada home. I appreciated the spirit he brought to our profession. My sincere condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues as they carry his memory while he moves on to the great beyond.

John's departure on July 5th, 2023, in Ottawa has shattered my heart. He was a remarkable person who had many gifts and passions, from poetry and photography to history and archives. He enjoyed music and dancing, road trips, camping and conversations. He had a diverse taste in music, from rock and punk to jazz and blues. He loved to dance. He was considerate, always curious, and eager to learn. He was a faithful friend, even if we didn't see each other often. Whenever we met, we had a strong bond, like time stood still. He always supported me and was kind to me when I needed him. Rest in Peace my Friend

My sincere condolences to John's family and Theresa, whom I was fortunate to meet on one of their trips back to Victoria. John was a dear friend, who was always happy to chat when I called him, usually on his birthday. We shared a love of poetry and writing in coffee shops and he often kept me company when I had stacks of marking to do. He loved music and we went to some live concerts together in our younger years. He was a really good cook too, and I enjoyed the way he could make something as simple as noodles and a cream sauce taste delicious. He'll always be remembered for his big heart, and missed.
My most sincere and heartfelt condolences to Lois, John, David, and Theresa.
I will miss John terribly; he was a huge part of my life. Our bond was forged in laughter, song, dance, and (unfortunately) many tears; it is a bond that distance, time, and--it appears--death will never break. I am fortunate to have an abundance of wonderful memories of him to fill the void he has left. I hope that each of you can find a similar comfort in your memories of him.
To quote Lou Reed, which I know John would (a) want and (b) laugh at me doing: "There's a bit of magic in everything, and some loss to even things out."
