It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of James Leighton Munro after a short illness, on June 23, 2025, a day before his 81st birthday.
Jim is survived by his wife of 58 years, Jane (née Bradley), with whom he was blessed to share a life rich in love and faith. He was a loving father to James (Mylène), Michelle, and Mary (Peter); a cherished grandfather to Gabriel (Janelle), Olivier, Eric (Safra), Graham (Jordyn), Ashley (Dany), Janan (Chad), Josh (Lea), and Will (Julia), and a proud great-grandfather to Evie. Each carries forward his spirit, values, and love.
Born in Vancouver, BC on June 24, 1944 to the late James and Rita Munro, Jim was the eldest of ten children. He remained close to his siblings Peter (Marlene), John (Fran), Paul (Judi), Cathy (Bill), Mary Pat (Dale), Marita (Don), Susan (Lewis), Carolyn (Brian), and Laura (George) throughout his life and deeply cherished the bond they shared. He is also remembered by his many nieces and nephews.
Jim joined the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) in 1962 and served as a military firefighter in the Canadian Armed Forces for over 35 years, a career he held with deep pride and dedication. His service shaped him and remained one of his proudest accomplishments. Jim was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 372, in Russell, Ontario.
His Catholic faith anchored his life. A longtime member of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Parish and a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 12401, Russell, Ontario, Jim gave his time freely in service to both his church and community.
The family would like to thank the team at Ottawa Civic Hospital for their kind and compassionate care.
Visitation will take place on Thursday, July 3, 2025 from 2:00pm to 5:00pm in the Hall of Colours at Beechwood Cemetery, 280 Beechwood Ave, Ottawa, Ontario. A funeral Mass will follow on Friday, July 4, 2025 at 11:00am at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Parish, Russell, Ontario, with a reception taking place afterwards.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to The Royal Canadian Legion Dominion Command Poppy Trust Fund.

I have known Jim since 1963. We were on the same Basic Firefighting Course, and after graduation, we worked on the same shift at 3 Fighter Wing, Germany.
In Ottawa, Jim was one of the retired firefighters who got together for lunch every 4 or 5 weeks. Our last luncheon was June 13.
Jim was a good person, a good firefighter, and a good friend. He will be missed.
My sincere condolences to Jane and her family.
