Hania passed away on May 4, 2022.

Beloved daughter of Dr. Tadeusz Sokolowski and Karolina Sokolowska. She is survived by loving family in Poland.

Hania was born in Warsaw, Poland. Her family fled the Nazi invasion in 1939 and travelled by way of the Middle East to London, England. Then they moved to Edinburgh, Scotland where her father taught at the Polish Medical School. Dr. Sokolowska attended the University of Edinburgh and obtained her medical degrees and training there. In the 1950s, she resided briefly in Minnesota and Boston and then moved to Ottawa, where she resided until her passing.

Dr. Sokolowska worked at the Royal Ottawa Hospital, was an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Ottawa, provided consulting services to the Ottawa Heart Institute and she maintained a private psychiatric practice until she retired.

To her many friends, please think of her sitting smiling on the dock of her cottage on the Gatineau River. That cottage was her favourite place.

In memory of Hania, contributions can be made to UNICEF.

Family, friends and colleagues are invited to attend a Celebration of Life at Beechwood Cemetery, 280 Beechwood Avenue, Ottawa on Wednesday, June 1st commencing at 10:00 am, followed by interment and reception at Beechwood Cemetery.

Special thanks to the dedicated staff at Colonel By Retirement Residence for their support in Hania’s later years.

She was a wonderful person, inquisitive and intelligent, and will be sadly missed.

Sorry to hear of Hanka’s death. I had always hoped to see her again and enjoy reminiscing about Ottawa, the cottage and all our mutual friends.

Hania she introduced me to New York she led me into medecine and mentored me along and introduced me to so many things from childhood to adulthood she was a friend an aunt a confidant and then she disappeared after my mother’s death and suddenly reappears in the obituaries-she was a pivot to the Polish post-war diaspora in Ottawa in the 1950s onward and a close friend to all - she is truly missed by us the children left over for whom she was always that friend that aunt who was always available. I am sad that I never had a chance to say goodbye to her I am sure that many of us in our 60s and 70s feel the same - I do miss her a lot she was a wonderful person.

Hania was so kind and giving. She was an extraordinary human being and professional who cared deeply about others. I am thankful she was in my life for well over 15 years, shining her light as she did.

You’ll always be with me Hania. Please May you rest in peace and know you remain very loved.
