It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Douglas Arthur Sutherland, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and proud Canadian Armed Forces Veteran. Doug passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 27, 2025, at the Ottawa General Hospital, at the age of 70.
Born in Trenton, Ontario, Canada, on December 29, 1954, Doug dedicated 27 years of his life to serving his country in the Canadian Armed Forces, specializing in Logistics. His distinguished career included peacekeeping tours in the Golan Heights and service with the 4 Service Battalion in Germany.
Beyond his military service, Doug was renowned for his kind, humorous, strong, generous, and helping nature. He had a deep love for his family and was characterized by his unwavering determination. Doug found great joy and purpose in automotive repairs, a hobby that showcased his practical skills and ingenuity.
Doug will be dearly missed by his beloved wife, Sandra P Sutherland. He was the cherished father of James Sutherland (Iris) and Patricia Lewis (Dave). He was adored by his four granddaughters, Ava Sutherland, Kaila Sutherland, Zoey Lewis, and Ziya Lewis.
He is survived by his siblings, Kathryn Sirvent, William Sutherland, and Heather Sutherland. Doug was predeceased by his parents, Donald A. Sutherland and Mary J. Sutherland, and his siblings Donna Heslip, Glenn Sutherland, and Grant Sutherland. He will also be fondly remembered by numerous extended family members.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to all caregivers, medical staff at the Ottawa General Hospital, personal support workers, family, and close friends for their compassionate care and support during this time.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Doug's memory can be made to the M.S. Society of Canada, which would be greatly appreciated.
A Funeral and Interment will take place at the National Military Cemetery at Beechwood Cemetery in Ottawa at 10a.m. on Friday, August 15, 2025, followed by a reception from 11a.m. to 1:00p.m. Family, friends, and military colleagues are invited to attend and honour his life and legacy.

To our dear Dad, Grandpa,
It's hard to put into words how much we miss you already. Our lives feel a little quieter, our laughter a little softer, without your presence.
We'll forever hold onto the memories of family gatherings, where your unique humor and playful spirit always shone brightest, making every moment together truly special. Watching you enjoying your grandkids brought us so much joy, and those moments of pure happiness will be cherished treasures in our hearts.
You taught us the meaning of strength, hard work, and honesty, lessons we carry with us every day. Your determination, even to the very end, was an inspiration. You were always there, ready to help and ready to listen.
Thank you, Grandpa, for everything. For the laughter, the lessons, the love, and the endless memories. We are so proud to be your family.
You may be gone from our sight, but never from our hearts.
With all our love, always,
James, Iris, Ava & Kaila

Dear Sandra and family; I was so saddened when Catherine called to tell me that Doug had passed away. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend who fought a very hard battle over the years. I always enjoyed speaking with Doug on so many different topics. He always had a good story to tell. Sandra, you were an incredible wife and friend to Doug and I know how much he appreciated everything you did to make him feel so loved! May all your wonderful memories become treasures as time passes. In sympathy and friendship, Diane Pieters
