It is with great sadness that we share that Catherine Marie McConnell (nee Shanks) passed away peacefully at home on September 11th, 2024 at the age of 69.

Catherine was born on November 17, 1954 in Pontiac County, Quebec. One of five siblings, Catherine was famed for being able to talk to anyone. She made friends wherever she went, and could befriend a stranger in seconds. Catherine was the beloved daughter of Kenneth and Doris Shanks (both predeceased), loving wife of Dean McConnell for 42 years, adoring mother of James, Josh, and Erin, treasured mother figure of Solange, Krissy, and Shawn, cherished sister of Myrna Aylett (John, deceased),  Robert Shanks (Boni, deceased), Rod Shanks (Karen), and Heather McElroy (Jim), loved sister-in-law to Jeanette Gaudet (Doug, deceased) and the late Garnet McConnell (Marcia) and adored aunt and “fairy Godmother” to all of her nieces and nephews. Her favourite role though, was being a devoted and fiercely loving grandmother of Olivia and Elliott.

Catherine was a giving soul. Whether it was working as a nurse, volunteering with Girl Guides of Canada or just working in her garden, Catherine loved to help any living creature that crossed her path. She especially loved the many cherished pets she called her babies throughout her life. Whether to a loved one, or a stranger in need, Catherine gave the best hugs, the kind that made you feel safe and radiated unconditional love. She was a beloved mother to all, or “McMomma” to many of her children’s friends throughout their lives. Those who knew her remember Catherine, or "Cack", for her quick wit, bright smile, and mischievous laugh. Catherine was a talented artist, a beautiful singer, a voracious reader, and loved watching TV. Whether it was RuPaul’s Drag Race, a treasure hunting show, or a silly cryptozoology documentary, her laughter filled our home. As a life-long learner, she loved her iPad and took special pride in her Duolingo streak. She made a lasting impression on all who knew her, and she was loved very dearly.

Very sincere condolences to all of Cathy's family. We were both Brownie leaders together many years ago. She was a lovely lady always ready to help out.

I was heartbroken to hear the news about Cathy, and equally so that I am unable to attend. But know that I am there in spirit. Cathy, I held your hand when we started school, you can hold mine when we meet again. Save me a spot on the curb, my Dear Friend. Rest in peace.
