It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Bernard “Emmett” Donnelly, on March 3rd, 2025 at the age of 92.
Emmett leaves behind his cherished and beloved wife of 71 years, Eleanor Marie Donnelly (nee Kavanagh).
He is also survived by his two daughters: Gail Ann Watts (Ernest) and Bonny Lee Smythe (Conrad), five grandchildren, Craig, Clayton, Rhonda, Robert, Amanda, in addition to his sisters-in-law, Mary Frampton, Paddy Kavanagh and Leona Kavanagh. He will be remembered by his great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by his parents Bernard Frederick Donnelly and Mary Belanger, his stepfather Kenneth McGowan, his sisters Joan Richards and Margaret Donnelly, and grandson Clinton Watts.
Emmett was born and raised in Ottawa, although his 38 years of military service took around the globe.
Emmett started working as a messenger and a clerk for the Canadian National Telegraphs, before starting his military career in 1950, he joined the 30th Field Regiment Royal Canadian Artillery, a reserve unit. He served overseas in the Korean War in the Artillery. Upon returning to Canada after the war, he married Eleanor in October 1953 in Shilo, Manitoba. His service took them to postings and a life residing across both Canada and Germany. During his service he was promoted to Master Warrant Officer, and in 1974 he earned the title of Master Gunner. Two years later in 1976, he was commissioned Captain. Notably, Emmett was awarded as a Member of Military Merit (M.M.M) in 1978. In 1980, they relocated back to Ottawa for his final posting in the National Defense Head Quarters, until his retirement in 1988.
During retirement Emmett and Eleanor enjoyed time with their families, and traveling.
He was an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion (Branch 632 - Orléans) and an active volunteer in his church, Annunciation of the Lord.
Family and friends are invited to the visitation at the Annunciation of the Lord Parish (2414 Ogilvie Rd, Gloucester) on Monday March 10th at 10am. The Funeral Mass will begin at 11am with a reception to follow at the church.
