Angiolina Speroni (née Bertorelli) died peacefully while sleeping in the early evening of April 18th.

The youngest of 8 children, she was born in the small village of Bardi, Italy in the Emilia-Romagna region. Living through and surviving the Second World War, Angiolina immigrated to Canada in the 1950s to join her then-fiancé Gino Speroni. They settled in Ottawa, where they married and had their son, Antonio. Both insisted on remaining citizens of their beloved Italy.

Angiolina was proud of her work, having worked at the University of Ottawa for decades. Through her employment she learned French and was able to integrate in the East-Ottawa communities where she lived. She was a fixture in her neighbourhoods, playing the role of Nonna (grandmother) to all of the children in the community. It was a role she cherished, as it was the same role that her own mother had played in their village in Italy.

She was also intensely proud of her grandchildren, Stephanie, Amanda, and Giancarlo. She was able to witness them attend, as students, the very institution that she had dedicated so many years as an employee. She will be loved and remembered fondly by her family and community.

The family thanks the loving care that Angiolina received first at the Ottawa Hospital’s General Campus and then later at the Elisabeth Bruyère Hospital who assisted and ensured her comfort in her final days.

I am happy to have met your mom, your grandma and friend through Yvette(my sister). I have very fond memories of her. When my family visited Yvette, she invited them over for dinner. She is a lovely, welcoming and friednly person. I also remember her sitting by the front door during the summer. My family and I are very sad about the passing of a dear friend who was like family to us. I will miss her. May God comfort and heal you as you learn to live with her memories. Cherish them.??God bless you, Uranie Depestre

I am glad that when I saw you for the last time, you were feeling great, you were happy, smiling, sitting outside your home, enjoying you the sun, your thriving plants and the neighborhood you love. That is how I will remember Angelina, always welcoming, made the best lasagna I've tasted. I will miss you!
