The Monthly Beechwood Cemetery Stroll
The Monthly Beechwood Stroll is a tour given on the last Sunday of each warm month (May to October), rain or shine, and begins at 1:00PM. The tour, lasting roughly 1.5 hours, is family friendly and gentle in walking speed. We also offer the tours in French or English. The Beechwood Cemetery Stroll is led by trained volunteers and focuses on local history and notable features and sections within this National Historic Site. All tours given by the Beechwood Cemetery are free of charge, however, if you feel like continuing to support the historical programming Beechwood Cemetery offers, please consider donating.
New!
The Beechwood Cemetery Stroll is now divided into the Eastern and Western halves of the Beechwood Cemetery property.
Western Tour
Walking through the West half of Beechwood Cemetery is like walking through the history of early Canada. Tour attendees will hear familiar Ottawa street names and how these prominent families built Ottawa. The tour will visit the older sections of the property, the beautiful gardens and the Mausoleum, and attendees will be given the opportunity to learn about how the local community cemetery grew into becoming Canada’s National Cemetery.
Eastern Tour
The East half of Beechwood Cemetery is filled with cultural and military/paramilitary history. Attendees will not only visit the largest community sections, but also walk amongst the headstones of veterans. The East tour offers those with interests in learning about the unique features of Beechwood and the stories of some of the less famous, but hugely influential individuals, the opportunity to do so in Canada’s National Cemetery.
