In 1845, Mother Élisabeth Bruyère and the Sisters of Charity arrived in Bytown, bringing with them a deep commitment to serve those most in need. From tending to the sick during epidemics to establishing schools, hospitals, and social services, their work laid the foundation for compassionate care in our community.
Their mission was guided by the words of the Gospel of Matthew:
"I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me."
(Matthew 25:35-36)
For 180 years, the Sisters of Charity have remained steadfast in their service—caring for the poor, educating generations, and uplifting the vulnerable. Their work has shaped the very fabric of our community, and their legacy continues today through education, healthcare, and social programs that provide dignity and support to those in need.
Join us at Beechwood Cemetery’s Élisabeth Bruyère Monument to honour not only Mother Bruyère’s enduring legacy but also the ongoing work of the Sisters of Charity, who continue to serve with faith, compassion, and unwavering dedication.
Following the commemoration, guests are invited to share in a moment of fellowship over tea and scones, a reflection of the hospitality and warmth that have always been at the heart of their mission.
All are welcome as we come together to honour, remember, and be inspired by their continued service to our community.
