The connection between France and Canada stretches to the 16th century and the founding of New France. Since then, the French have been involved in every aspect of Canada's development as explorers, educators, businessmen, politicians, writers and artists.
The French community has grow ever since and over 14.5% of Canadian trace their heritage and ancestry to France (2016 Census). With the centuries of history, many people from France have come to Canada, immigrated and established their lives here. Immigration to Canada from France has grown significantly in recent years, particularly since 2008.
While the five-year period prior to 2008 saw 25,026 French citizens becoming permanent residents in Canada, an impressive 34,619 French citizens gained permanent residence in Canada between 2008 and 2012, constituting a 38% increase in immigration from France. Canada remains a top destination for French Immigrants.
