It is with profound sadness that we announce the death of Jean on August 21, 2025, following a sudden and brief illness. He will be forever missed by his loving partner Judy (née Halme) and his much-loved son, daughter and granddaughter, Justin (Roberta McRae), Liane and Geneva (Kocum). He also leaves behind his brothers Louis (Hélène Dallaire) and Paul (Lison Chèvrefils), his sister Louise, and a niece and nephews. He is also deeply missed by Liane’s dog Francie.

Jean had a zest for life and approached it with a spirit of adventure, an unending curiosity, and stylish enthusiasm and flair.  He is lovingly remembered by his family and countless friends for his generosity, kindness, and compassion.

We extend our gratitude to doctors, nurses and staff at the Hôtel-Dieu and Enfant-Jésus hospitals in Québec City, the Ottawa Hospital Civic Campus and the Bruyère Health Saint-Vincent Hospital. We especially want to thank the many friends who shared memories, tributes and kind words which we read to Jean in his final days. It was a gift to Jean and to us.

In lieu of flowers, charitable donations can be made, if you wish, to a humanitarian cause such as Médecins Sans Frontières or Amnesty International.

Jean is everywhere and nowhere. Our hearts are broken.

My first reaction to the news was not so much sadness but the thought that he had lived so fully and richly - as he continued to do last winter in Paris - that he packed more in his life than many other people EVER will. He must surely have know this. And derived great satisfaction from the knowledge. Jean was an energetic, interested and interesting person, always full of stories, plans and ideas. I still have so many emails from him in my in box about things to do in Paris. He continued to send them to me while we were there last winter, always sharing his suggestions. The obituary says he was generous, and I suppose that included sharing his ideas of things to do in Paris so everyone could enjoy the city! Merci Jean, un exemple pour nous tous. Mes condoléances à Judy et au reste de la famille.

Judy, Liane and family
My very fond memories of you are mostly associated with our Nunavut work. Jean was especially lovely and understanding in Iqaluit with my dear boy who also remembers him fondly. You are prevalent in my thoughts and prayers as you mourn Jean’s passing.

Dear Judy and family, We were so saddened by the news of Jean’s passing. Many Aquarina memories flashed through both our minds of his spirit of adventure, compassion, and prowess on the tennis courts . He will be remembered for his infectious smile, enthusiasm and love of life. With deepest sympathies, Eileen and Craig
