A life well-lived ended when Sigrid Westerheide-Hough left us at the age of 93.

With an adventurous and curious spirit, she came to Canada from Germany, by herself on a ship in 1952 at the age of 23. This same spirit enabled Sigrid to move to Africa for 6 years with her young family in the 1960s and ‘70s, and to undertake graduate studies in criminology in mid-life. Her compassion for, and interest in, people underpinned a 19 year career as a probation and parole officer.

Sigrid lived through tragedy and violence but never lost her compassion or sense of humour. She lived with cancer for over the 10 years and throughout life’s challenges, it never occurred to her to give up or give in.

Sigrid was pre-deceased by her soul mate Bill Hough, with whom she shared over 30 years of adventure, joy and quiet contentment. She leaves behind her treasured grandson, Olivier, daughters Bicki, Linda, and son-in-law Louis. Sigrid also leaves behind dear family and friends in Germany.

The interment will take place at Beechwood, Funeral, Cemetery and Cremation Services, 280 Beechwood Ave., Ottawa, ON, on Saturday, June 3rd, 2023 at 2:30pm, followed by a celebration of life at 3:00 p.m. All are welcome.

Sincere thanks to the Kentwood staff at the Glebe Centre for their care and kindness, as well as the Ottawa Hospital, General campus.  In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the Glebe Centre or another long term care residence in Ottawa.

Sigrid, a true friend even if it was only late in life. She was a gentle Lady and fiercely independent. I cherish her memory as a forever friend.

Sigrid was a wonderful woman and impacted my life through conversations and visits shared with her. She could be very conversant and shared recall of things important to her. Her smile was infectious and she was adored and respected by many. She will be missed.

Sigrid was a remarkable and inspiring person. The significant hardships she overcame are a testament to her courage and strength. Yet her grace and laugh are what I will remember most. She was very dear to me and I will miss her immensely. My condolences to her family and other friends.

I worked with Sigrid as her administrative assistant. She was a wonderful officer to work with. I enjoyed listening to her stories regarding her life abroad and told her she could write a book. She laughed and said no one would read it. My condolences to her family.

It was over 10 years ago when I first met Sigrid through her husband Bill. Although it would be a long story to explain the “grave look” it was always a source of amusement for the three of us. I will miss those special times when we had coffee to together with Rolf and the depth of our conversations. I like others will miss her wise counsel and yes, the infectious smile as well. In Aviation we have a saying “May Sigrid’s final flight west have fair skies and following winds”
