Maxime Tack Nang Ong Tone passed peacefully on July 5, 2022 at the age of 91 at the Ottawa General Hospital with his family by his side. Beloved husband of Anne Marie for more than 68 years. Proud father of Suzy (Guy), Lindsay (Gloria), Christian (Madeleine), Bernard (Christine) and Michel (Hannah). Dearest grandfather to Stephan (Celina), Christopher (Stephanie), Jennifer (Nasser), Melissa (Anthony), Cheryl (Andrew), Cathy (Nick), Grace, Jade, Alex, Amanda, Wendy (Christian), Dorothy (Arnaud), Jerry (Caroline), Cindy (Gus), Great grand father to Nathan, Zoe, Luc, Julien, Olivier, Sophie, Emilio, Damian, Benneth, Cora, Alexandre, Ethan, Chloe, Clara, Nigel, Lyanna, and Aiden.

Maxime lived a fulfilling life, he was a very sociable person and loved to entertain. Growing up, we always had huge dinner parties with friends and relatives for every occasion like birthdays, graduations, engagements, weddings and anniversaries. He made friends easily wherever he went. He was also very active in the church community and was a deacon at the Cathedral St. Louis in Mauritius. He was also very instrumental in acquiring a plot of land to establish a senior recreational centre (Fook Look Soo) in Mauritius.

A special thank you to Peter Fan as a friend and his spiritual support, Dr Albert Yeung Lai Wah as a friend and his medical support and Laura Gagnon, his support worker who looked after him so well in his later days.

Friends and family are invited to visit at the Beechwood National Memorial Centre, 280 Beechwood Avenue, on Friday, July 8, from 5 to 8:00PM and Saturday, July 9, 2022 from 10 to 11 AM. A Funeral Mass will be held at Sheng Shen Chinese Catholic Community, 1187 Michael Street North, Ottawa on Saturday, July 9, 2022 at 12noon. Interment to follow at Beechwood Cemetery.

At the request of the family, please no hugging or handshaking. The family would appreciate for masks to be worn and the use of hand sanitizer.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Sheng Shen (Holy Spirit) Parish on their website: https://www.ottawachinesecatholic.org/

Lindsay Ong-Tone

Eulogy
I am Lindsay, the eldest son of Maxime Tack Nang Ong Tone.
I would like to say a few words about dad on behalf of my siblings, Suzy, Christian, Bernard and Michel.
First of all I would like to thank everyone to be with us today for our father’s celebration of life. We know that many of you have come from far and wide. Thank you.
Dad was a very sociable person. He loved to entertain. We used to have many huge dinner parties while growing up. Everyone was welcomed, from the clerks working in his shop to even the Bishop of Mauritius. How excited and worried we were the first time we heard that the Bishop was coming. We were all wondering what the protocol for greeting the Bishop was. Does one shake his hand or only kiss his ring?
Dad cared a lot for his whole family. Although he went to work 7 days a week, he would always find time to spend with us. He would come back home at lunch time on Sundays then he would drive us to the beach for a picnic. Some evenings we would go for a ride after supper (he would say let’s go popom). We would go to the harbour where there were boat tours – 25 sous le tour 4 bateaux. Those were memorable days.
It was very important for him that we should have a good education. He used to tell us that he never finished school as his father needed help in the shop. However he promised he would do everything he could to provide us with a good education. This he did!! As he said, once you have a good education, no one can take it away from you.
I was awarded a scholarship to go to France to study medicine and also got an offer of acceptance by the University of Glasgow to study medicine. I would say that most people would have taken the scholarship without a second thought. However, we talked about it and he took me to meet several doctors to seek their opinion. Finally, he let me make my decision. You all know where I went!!
When I left for university, he told me not to worry about the money and that he would be able to afford it. However, he said that I was to make sure that I was never cold or hungry. What a dad!!!
Dad was a great role model and very easy to talk to. He was always there to listen to us and give advice. When I was at university, this was before the days of WhatsApp and Facetime, he would write me every week. Phone calls were very expensive between Mauritius and Scotland and billed by 3 minutes intervals. He would still call every so often to make sure I was fine.
Dad was a very religious man. He was very active in the Catholic Church Community in Mauritius. He was Deacon at the St. Louis Cathedral and very close to Cardinal Margeot who came to supper at our house regularly. He said he loved mum’s food, especially her soup.
Dad was a visionary and great entrepreneur. He saw that there was a need for a facility for the seniors in Mauritius. He was thus instrumental in acquiring a plot of land to establish a senior recreational centre called Fook Look Soo before he emigrated to Canada in 1984.
Behind every great man is a great woman. I would like to thank mum Anne Marie to whom dad had been married for 68 years. They made the greatest team and supported each other incessantly. They did everything together from Line Dancing to Cruising to Alaska and more. She was always there for him and him for her.
I would also like to take this opportunity to publicly thank our youngest brother Mike who looked after dad 24/7 for the last several months. He was really dad’s primary caregiver taking him to his appointments and giving him his medications and even helping him go to the bathroom in his later days.
Dad would have loved to be here celebrating with us today…. Well I am sure he is here with us!! We love you dad and we will miss yo
