Born in Blind River (Ontario), March 31, 1935, to Alphonse and Dona (Mayer) Ménard, Eugène passed away on Friday July 1, 2022, in Ottawa, after a brave and courageous journey with Myeloma.  He is survived by his beloved wife and best friend of 62 years (July 2, 1960), Monique (Filion), and his loving daughters Danielle (Pierre de Varennes), Nathalie and Geneviève (Simon Hayles), sister Pierrette and sister-in-law Jeannette (Maurice), as well as three grandchildren Elyse (Jordyn Deschenes), Gabriel and Maxime de Varennes. He was predeceased by four brothers (Alexandre, Gérald, Jean, Maurice) and six sisters (Marguerite, Vivianne, Jeanne, Thérèse, Yvonne, and Cécile). Eugène was also a dearly loved brother-in-law, godfather, uncle and great uncle to many, many, many nephews and nieces.  On his final days, Gene was surrounded by his loving wife, three daughters and sons-in-law, grandchildren, sister, nephew André and close family friend Luce, all of whom he adored more than anything else in the world.

Eugène dedicated his career life to caring for his patients, most of them infants and children, as a pediatric anesthesiologist at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO), where he will be remembered as an admirably patient and exceptionally compassionate physician and friend. Known by many as Dr. Ménard, he was an inspiration to his colleagues; as well as a dedicated mentor to residents of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Ottawa, with a reputation of having been extremely generous with sharing his breadth of experience and depth of knowledge.

The family wishes to sincerely thank his family physician Dr. Carolyne Roy, for her compassionate approach and great care for over 30 years.

The family will welcome family and friends for a Celebration of Life at Beechwood Cemetery, located at 280 Beechwood Avenue (K1L 8A6) in Ottawa, on Sunday, July 10, 2022. The ceremony will take place at 1 p.m., followed by a reception.

In honour of Eugène’s years of service and love of his job and children, please consider making a donation to CHEO’s Department of Anesthesia. Link for online donations: CHEO Foundation

I’m so very sorry for your loss, I want to extend my deepest sympathy to you Nat your Mom and sisters, and your entire family. May your memories of him bring you comfort, and knowing he’s in a better place watching over you all, bring you peace. He will be thought of often and fondly.

Gene was such a nice person, so gentle with kids. I have this
memory from residency where Gene is walking hand in hand with one of our
patients with me walking behind them. No premed just his calm, kind manner.
It's a memory of "greatness" that I'll always cherish. At my sad old age, I still
try to live up to the expectations of people like Gene and Elliot Rhine. It has
made me a better physician and, I hope, a better person.

I worked with Dr. Menard when I was a visiting resident doing a rotation at CHEO almost 30 years ago. I remember him as a kind man and thoughtful teacher. My condolences to you all.

Eugene was a mentor and then a colleague at CHEO. He was always the perfect gentleman and treated children with such kindness and gentility. A genuine loss
