Peter Tzeng-Shuian Huang

It is with great sadness that we announce Peter Tzeng-Shuian Huang passed peacefully on March 16, 2022 at the Ottawa Hospital Civic Campus at the age of 94 after a short illness.  He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him, especially for his smile and the twinkle in his eyes.

Born in Wenzhou, Zhejiang province, China on August 15, 1927, Peter was the sixth son and seventh of eight children to Huang Sui-Zhi and Xu Fei-Luo and grew up surrounded by a large family that influenced his life.  As part of a large family that ran a retail business, he developed his sweet tooth early on and Peter often grabbed some sugar or sweets in the store when he had the opportunity.  

Peter left home and moved to Taiwan when the Communist took over in 1949. While Peter was in the Airforce in Taiwan, he went to Louisiana, USA to train for 5 months before he was married.  Instead of enjoying an expenses paid training trip and dine well in the officer’s mess and travel like some of his peers, Peter focused on picking up new skills and he saved money to bring home so he could get married.

Peter met Lee Mo-Lan (Anna) while he was a lieutenant and communication specialist in the Airforce in Taiwan and Anna was a civilian switchboard operator.  With a lot more men than women on the base, Anna was courted by many but Peter and Anna fell in love.  They were married on August 14, 1955 in Tainan, Taiwan.

After leaving the Airforce with a rank of Major, Peter worked at a semiconductor plant owned by Philips then General Instrument in Kaohsiung, Taiwan where he started as an engineer and he was quickly promoted to production manager in charge of 200 people. He was a respected and valued member of the team with the executives from the US for his tireless work ethics, focus on production efficiency and being a good boss who mentored and looked after his staff.  Peter was away from his family for most of the week and came back on the weekends and packed as many activities as possible with them.

Wanting a better education for their childrens, Peter and Anna packed up their whole family and immigrated to Canada in 1976 and they settled in Ottawa when he was 48.  With limited manufacturing opportunities in Ottawa at the time, Peter bought a grocery store which he ran successfully until retiring in 1997.

Peter enjoyed the leisure of retired life with Anna until a stroke and moved into the Glebe Centre at the end of 2018 and Anna joined him there early in 2019.  Many in the Glebe Centre remember Peter’s smile and his love for sweets.  His eyes lit up when seeing Anna and a big smile when he saw cakes we brought in but the biggest smiles came when both were there together.  

Peter was devote husband of Anna (Lee) for 66 years; loving father to  Lily Hsiung (Jim Hsiung), Bill (Jessica Tsai) and Mary; cherished grandfather of  Timothy Hsiung (Tina Tsai), Kimberly Hsiung Weber (Ben Weber), Jackie; and great-grandfather to Brian Hsiung.
