Each June, Canadians celebrate Portuguese Heritage Month, recognizing the rich history, culture, traditions, and contributions of Portuguese Canadians who have helped shape communities across the country. Portuguese Heritage Month provides an opportunity to reflect on the enduring legacy of Portuguese families, their deep commitment to community, and the cultural traditions that continue to enrich Canada’s diverse social fabric.
At Beechwood Cemetery, Canada’s National Cemetery, this heritage is proudly reflected through our longstanding relationship with Ottawa’s Portuguese community.
In 1997, Beechwood established a dedicated section within the cemetery for the exclusive use of Portuguese families. Located in Section 101, this special area contains more than 200 lots and serves as a lasting testament to the faith, traditions, and family values that have long defined the Portuguese Canadian experience in Ottawa.
At the heart of the section stands a beautiful statue of Our Lady of Fatima, one of the most cherished symbols in Portuguese culture and Catholic devotion. For generations, devotion to Our Lady of Fatima has served as a source of comfort, hope, and spiritual strength for Portuguese families around the world.
The monument commemorates the events of 1917, when the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared to three shepherd children in Fátima, Portugal: Lúcia dos Santos and her cousins Francisco and Jacinta Marto. The messages associated with the apparitions called for prayer, peace, compassion, and faith during a time of global uncertainty. More than a century later, the story of Fátima continues to hold a special place within Portuguese identity and Catholic tradition.
For many Portuguese families in Ottawa, the section at Beechwood is more than a place of burial. It is a place where language, culture, faith, and family history come together. It provides an enduring connection between generations and ensures that traditions brought to Canada by Portuguese immigrants continue to be preserved and celebrated.
The Portuguese community has made significant contributions to Canada’s economic, cultural, and social development. From entrepreneurship and construction to education, public service, arts, and community leadership, Portuguese Canadians have helped build stronger and more vibrant communities from coast to coast. Portuguese Heritage Month offers an opportunity to recognize these contributions while celebrating the traditions that continue to unite families and communities.
As Canada’s National Cemetery and a National Historic Site, Beechwood is proud to be home to many faith and cultural communities. The Portuguese section stands as a powerful example of how remembrance can preserve not only individual legacies but also the collective stories of entire communities.
This Portuguese Heritage Month, we invite visitors to explore Section 101, reflect on the legacy of Ottawa’s Portuguese community, and celebrate the faith, traditions, and family bonds that continue to shape generations.
By honouring our diverse histories, we strengthen the shared story of Canada.
