Peacefully at her Ottawa home of 69 years on Tuesday December 17, 2024, at the age of 96. Predeceased by her beloved husband of 64 years, Malcolm “Mac” Buchanan. Loving and cherished mother to John, Ann and Robert. Predeceased by her sibling June and Allan.
Lois spent her early years in North Bay and Sudbury and was a First-Class Honour Graduate of the University of Toronto, where her attendance was a profound life-altering experience.
Her family lived in Sudbury and area for 6 years before moving to Ottawa in 1956 where they were amongst the first residents of the Elmvale Acres Neighborhood.
Founding members of the Unitarian-Universalist Fellowship of Ottawa, Lois and Mac joined and were stalwart members the Unitarian Congregation of Ottawa since 1959.
Lois joined the ranks of volunteers of the Cancer Clinic at the Ottawa General Hospital, serving diligently for 20 loyal years.
She was blessed by having enjoyed lifelong friendships from her University years throughout her long life in Ottawa.
Friends and relatives are invited to visit on Friday January 24th at the Beechwood National Memorial Centre, 280 Beechwood Ave. Ottawa, after 1 p.m. A celebration of Lois’ life will be held at 2 p.m. Those wishing, in memoriam donations may be made to Seed Change.

Lois always welcomed our family to her home, ready to discuss anything under the sun over food and coffee. I'll always remember the Saturday pancakes, cooked by her children while she held court at the dining table. She had a fabulous sense of humour and a twinkle in her eyes. She made an impression on my children, who were sad to hear of her passing. RIP Lois, we'll never forget you!

The last time we saw Lois (and Malcolm) was at their long-time home in Ottawa shortly before we left to live in Nova Scotia in 2008. Memories have grown dim in the intervening years, but our lasting impression of Lois has been of a lovable and wonderful person to know and to interact with, and her passing saddens us.
