Sergeant (Retired) James “Jim” Albert Frederick, CD1 – RCAF

December 26, 1958 – July 7, 2023

It is with profound sadness to announce the passing of Sergeant (retired) James “Jim” Frederick on Friday, July 7, 2023, hand in hand with his wife by his side and surrounded by family and friends.

He is survived by his loving wife and soulmate Suzanne, his children James Jr., John Brian (Tara), Lana, Jonathan (Elizabeth) and Jennifer.  Jim is pre-deceased by his parents Brian Frederick and Marie-Paule (Lannigan) Frederick, his sister Patricia who are there to greet him and continue to surround him with unconditional love.  He will be missed by his siblings Nancy (Ray), Janice (Dave), Robert (Marie-Josee), Lori (Warren), as well as his three beautiful grandchildren, Vivianne, Nathanael and Gregory, aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews, cousins, in-laws, and other family and friends.

Jim and Sue knew each other for 59 years, shared a life together for over 30 years, and finally decided to get married 24 years ago.  Jim was a proud 3rd generation service member and considered his colleagues in the Royal Canadian Air Force as family.  His career as an Aviation Technician included being part of Flight Safety, Search and Rescue, and other teams which ended after 30 years of service when he retired.  He continued on to serve as a Commissionaire and then ventured as a Technical Writer at Sonovision Canada, where he had the pleasure of working alongside his daughter Jennifer, teaching her much about the aerospace world as well as acquiring new friends and colleagues.

Jim was a quiet soul who was always willing to lend a helping hand when called upon.  Jim and Sue contributed their time together for the good of the people, such as collecting donations of school supplies, toys, books, etc.  These were sent to Haiti at a time when the country suffered political turmoil and devastating floods, to improve the children’s quality of life.  They volunteered and came to the aid of many citizens during the 2017 Gatineau/Ottawa flood.  During multiple deployments and TD’s, Jim received many awards and commendations for his actions.

His favorite relaxation activities were playing golf, sitting by the fire, reading a book by the lake, fishing after supper and then heading out for an evening boat tour around the lake.  He had a calm and sensitive heart and enjoyed peace, tranquility and harmony.

The family would like to thank the entire staff at the Gatineau Hospital, Gatineau Cancer Centre, Hull Hospital and the McGill Cedar Centre for their continuous care.  We also specifically want to extend our upmost gratitude to Dre. Annie Duchesne, Dre. Shelley Sud, Dre Marie-Claude Charbonneau, Dr. Guy Leduc, Nurse Lizanne Leblanc-Brisson, Nurse Élise Lahaie, Nurse Judith Savard and the many others who ensured that Jim could leave this life at home with the grace and dignity he wanted. We also wish to thank Bennet and Peter from Beechwood for their sincere empathy, patience and understanding through this difficult time.

Family and friends are invited to his Celebratory Mass on Tuesday July 18th, 2023, at Église St-Gabriel (21 rue Principale, Bouchette, Quebec) at 10h00, followed by a reception at Beechwood Funeral, Cemetery and Cremation Services (280 Beechwood Avenue, Ottawa, Ontario) at 13h30.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Gatineau Health Foundation in James’ memory.

We will forever love and miss Jim!

Jim was always my slightly older Canadian cousin. We all looked up to him. I will miss his smooth nature and great witty responses to my dumb American questions. Rest in peace Jim.
