Dick died peacefully at Winchester District Memorial Hospital on April 29th, 2023, after a lengthy struggle with Parkinson’s. Cherished husband to Shirley (née Davies) Sherwood for 64 years. Dearly loved father to Greg (Vivien), Kate (Rob) and grandfather to Malcolm (Isidora) and Dylan. Much loved uncle to Ann (Alan) and Peter (Jacquie). Predeceased by his parents Dorothy (Blaxland) and Herbert Sherwood, siblings John (Jenny), Jane, and Robin, and nephew Rob (Linda).
Dick joined the RCMP in 1958, serving for more than 30 years. As a Boy Scout Master for many years, he helped to instill in others a love of nature, camping, and canoeing. He was active in his community, including devoting his time and skill to the municipal pool and other recreational spaces. He was an avid reader, a skilled woodworker, and a keen gardener. Chivalrous, intelligent, skillful, active, traditional, thoughtful, and kind are among the words used to describe him by those who knew and loved him. He will be greatly missed.
Family and friends are invited to Beechwood, Funeral, Cemetery and Cremation Services (280 Beechwood Avenue, Ottawa), on Friday, August 11, 2023, for an interment in the RCMP section located at Beechwood Cemetery at 1:30 p.m., followed by a Reception from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Beechwood National Memorial Center. Memorial donations can be made to Parkinson Canada or to the Michael J. Fox Foundation.

Dick was an influential person during my childhood. As my scout master for several years and then as the "director" of the Russell Pool where I worked for 4 summers, Dick taught me more than I can summarize here. His knowledge of nature seemed boundless and his skills with a paddle and a whittling knife were mesmerizing. He was a kind of traditional renaissance man. When asked who besides my family had the biggest impact on my life, I have always said it was Dick.
Shirley, Greg, and Kate, I hope it eases the pain of loss to know how much he meant to so many.

We worked together in 1978. He built a lovely rocking chair for my children. The chair was later cherished by my grandchildren. I revel today at Dick’s kindness and skill. He was a lovely man.

I worked with Dick for a couple of years in the mid 90s. He was intelligent, thoughtful, helpful, honest, kind, considerate and humble. In summary, a real great guy.
