Passed away peacefully, at the Ottawa Civic Hospital on Tuesday, September 27, 2022; age 86 years. Don was born on February 9, 1936, in Winnipeg, Manitoba to Charles and Wilhelmina Johnstone. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 46 years, Patricia Johnstone (nee Sands). Loving uncle of Kimberley (Randy), Nancy, Darrin, Jim (Cheryl) and late Debbie, great-uncle of Cassandra (Adam), Brad (Alissa), Calvin, Justin, Silas, Brooklyn and Marley. Brother-in-law of Glenda Lahde (late Paul) and David Sands (Janice). Predeceased by his brother Brian Johnstone (late Adrian). He will greatly be missed by his four-legged friend Oscar.
Don graduated from the University of Manitoba in Mechanical Engineering, which led him to a 37-year career with the Federal Government Patent Office. Funeral arrangements under the care and direction of Beechwood, Funeral, Cemetery and Cremation Services (280 Beechwood Ave, Ottawa). In keeping with Don’s wishes, a private family service will be held. For those who wish to make a donation in memory, you may do so to a charity of your choice.
To Patricia and Donald's family I express my deepest condolences on Don's passing. I worked with Don in the Mechanical Division from the day I joined in 1970 until the day he retired. Talking with Don was always enjoyable, interesting and rewarding to a new examiner. Don kept his personal life separate from his office life and we never reconnected after his retirement. He was and will be missed by all.
