Grethe Korfitsen Peveril

January 1941 - January 2026

Born in Aalborg, Grethe grew up in the scarcity of post-war Denmark. In 1960, while working for the local municipality, she met Norm, a dashing Canadian RCAF pilot whom she followed to France two years later. Eventually they moved to Canada where she experienced serious culture and temperature shock upon arrival in Portage le Prairie at -40ºC.

After their first son was born in Moose Jaw in 1965, the small family soon moved to Montreal where Norm had accepted a position with Air Canada. Their second son was born in 1968. Grethe made sure to bring Hygge to Canada with candles lit daily, cozy throws, and the omnipresent Danish flag. Her smorgasbords were famous amongst family and friends.

She loved exploring the fashion district in Montreal using her finds to create stylish outfits complimented by her collection of beautiful Danish jewelry.

Regular trips to Denmark to visit her beloved brother Jørgen and extended family ensured her boys built a connection to her Danish heritage that persists today.

Many happy years were spent in their home in St. Eugene where they moved to in 1983. With her tight circle of friends and neighbours they enjoyed regular dinner evenings and Grethe spent countless hours in her garden.

Once the boys had left home, Grethe enjoyed numerous trips with Norm. As early adopters of house exchanges they experienced beautiful locations around the world. She especially enjoyed trips to London, U.K. where they would stay in the RAF Club close to Buckingham Palace.

After Norm’s retirement they moved to Ottawa and became Snowbirds for several years. Ottawa gave them the opportunity to reconnect with old friends from the RCAF and make new ones.

Grethe was a proud Farmor to five grandkids whom she all adored and was known for always being there for them and giving her honest opinion on things.

Grethe will be remembered with love, laughter, and countless fond memories by her family and friends. Raise a glass of Akvavit in memory of the love of Norm’s life, beloved Mor, Farmor, and friend.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Online memories and condolences can be expressed below.

If desired, memorial donations can be made to a charity or not-for-profit of your choice.
