Peacefully, in his 99th year.

Born in 1927 and raised in London, England, Roy came of age during WWII. His post-war military service in Japan was life-changing, introducing him to the joys of travel and the plight of poorer countries. Determined to try and work for change, he attended St. John’s College, Cambridge, and subsequently emigrated to Canada in 1954. There, at a party in Jan. 1955, he spotted Rosemary, a fellow Brit on holiday. They were married for 63 years and raised four children. Their shared passions included world travel, classical music, theatre and British police procedurals.

Throughout his career as an economist, Roy worked for the Economic Council of Canada and the OECD, writing a number of books. In addition, he supported a variety of charities, working for many years on the boards of Plan Canada and the Ottawa Distress Centre.

Predeceased by Rosemary in 2018, Roy is survived by his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Paul (Elsa Suárez and son Nicolas); Ian (Diane de Grandmont and children Michèle (Olaf Garcia and their son Luca), Sean, Brigitte (Marco Bernard and their children Raphaëlle and Frédérique) and Anne); Claire (Edwin Hubert and their children Charlotte and Daniel); and Alex (Rochelle Relyea).

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Plan Canada or the United Way of East Ontario.
