It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Douglas (Doug) McKinnon, beloved father, brother, uncle, and friend.
Doug was born to the late Theodore and Elizabeth (Bessie) McKinnon and grew up in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia. He was predeceased by his siblings Theresa, Leone, Teddy, and Anne Vihos (Lakis). He is survived by his dear sister Anita Sinclair (Roy) and brother Frederick (Marie).
As a teenager, Doug joined the cadets and took great pride in polishing his shoes and pressing his uniform, discipline and attention to detail that carried into his adult life. Early on, he worked at a bank in Glace Bay before moving to Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia, where he began his family and welcomed his two beloved children, Michael and Valerie.
Doug proudly served in the Royal Canadian Air Force, where he found fulfillment in developing his skills and serving his country. Despite being away from home at times, he never forgot his roots. Always remembering to send thoughtful gifts to his younger siblings and later to his nieces and nephews, especially at Christmas.
He went on to enjoy a long and successful career, largely with Bell Canada in an executive role, before retiring in his fifties. Retirement marked the beginning of a new chapter of joy and adventure with his beloved wife, Micheline, with whom he shared a passion for skiing, teaching others on the slopes at their Chateaux in Mt. Tremblant. They would escape to sunny Sarasota, Florida, for long winters filled with golf, laughter, and leisure. Doug was one of the Founding Parties at Camelot Golf Course in Ottawa. Doug and his wife shared many wonderful times with friends for many years on that course.
After Micheline’s passing, Doug found peace and joy in the wide-open beauty of Alberta, spending treasured time with his son Michael (Malvena) and granddaughters Tammy, Courtney, and Amy, surrounded by horses, shepherds, and the natural beauty he came to love.
Doug will be remembered for his infectious smile, clever wit, and an unshakable zest for life. In his final years, he was lovingly supported by his niece Tawnia Vihos, who had been Doug’s rock in his final years.
The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the compassionate staff at Perley & Rideau Veterans' Health for the excellent care and kindness shown to Doug in his final days. The family would also like to thank Doug’s PSW Patrick who was an extremely important part of Doug's happiness in the last 4 months.
May he rest in peace with his beloved wife Micheline.
