John Bereza

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John after a short battle with cancer. John passed away peacefully, surrounded by family at his home in Ottawa, on Wednesday, September 2, 2026; age 83.

John grew up on a farm in Lac La Biche, Alberta, where he developed a strong work ethic, a deep appreciation for family, and the values that would guide him throughout his life. His dedication to serving others led him to a fulfilling career in policing, where he proudly served his community before retiring.

John is the beloved husband of Pierrette Bereza (née Côte). The Cherished father of Julie Huneault (Alain Huneault) and the loving and devoted grandfather to Toby and Sophie.

He will also be lovingly remembered by his siblings, Metro (Phyllis), Mary (Terry), Olga (Brian) and Loveth, as well as by his many nieces, nephews, friends, and extended family, all of whom will deeply miss his kindness, humour, generosity, and presence in their lives.

John was predeceased by his parents, Alex and Ann Bereza, and by his siblings, Marshall and Steve.

John loved playing sports (golf, baseball and cycling in particular). He especially liked watching his beloved Toronto Maple Leafs and the New York Yankees play. A lover of cold snowy winters, it was not uncommon to see him far from his house on one of his many long evening walks. His friends will remember a smart, caring and  funny person who showed the importance of his relationships through loyalty and empathy. At heart, John was above all a family man who would do anything to make his close ones happy, secure and without want. We are all grateful for him and we stand on his broad shoulders.

Family and friends are invited to Beechwood Funeral, Cemetery and Cremation Services, (280 Beechwood Avenue, Ottawa), for a Visitation on Sunday, September 20, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. until the time of the Memorial Service at 4:00 p.m., in Beechwood’s Sacred Space, with a Reception to follow. A private family interment will take place at a later date. For those who are unable to attend in person, you are invited to attend via Live stream.
