Dear friends and family,
It is with the greatest sadness that we are sharing the news that our beloved Gerd — husband, father, grandfather (Opa), and father‑in‑law — passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on September 4th. He was taken from us way too early, at the young age of 72.
We are still shocked and struggling to come to terms with this loss. We are trying to find the right words and make sense of it all, but it is hard.
Gerd was full of life and had so much love to give: for his family, for his friends, and for his work as a journalist. He was a wonderful husband and life partner, a father, a grandfather (Opa), a brother, an uncle, a family man, a friend, and a colleague. He touched many lives and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
His life ended while he was doing something he loved. He was on a cycling tour in Bavaria with Ute and their friends when he suffered an apparent heart attack that led to a severe fall. He passed away shortly afterwards, taken from us far too early, at the young age of 72.
Funeral Service and Celebration of Life
While we remain in shock, we are profoundly grateful for the many beautiful moments we were able to share with him. We want to celebrate his life here in his chosen hometown of Ottawa, surrounded by family and friends who meant so much to him.
We believe this is what Gerd would have wanted.
As such, we would like to invite you to join us for a funeral service at St. Joseph’s Church, 174 Wilbrod Street, on Thursday, October 15, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. A private family interment will follow. Please join us afterwards for a reception at Beechwood National Memorial Centre, 280 Beechwood Avenue, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., where we will celebrate Gerd’s life and share memories together.
Memorial Preferences
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the University of Ottawa Heart Institute or to Médecins Sans Frontières, two of the causes that Gerd cared deeply about.
With love, Ute, Melanie, Johannes and Family
