Alvin Shayne Cader, husband, father, Zaydee, and friend to more people than we could count, passed away suddenly on August 20, 2026, at the age of 76.
Son of Blossom and Peter Cader, Alvin was the beloved husband of Nadia Mohammed and the loving father of Jonathan Jordan (Chelsea) and Khalil Avram (Eden). He was the dear Zaydee (grandfather) of Lola Blossom, Shalom Yoni, Sukhi Gold, Jorjina Jones, and Joni Elizabeth.
He also leaves his siblings Eric, Momina “AP”, Faiz “Killy”, Rakeeb, and Yazid “Tigro”; his nieces and nephews Joanne, Aziza, Elise, Laura, Lisa, Natalia, Paula, Neil, Yasmin, Myles, Katrina, Adam, Josh, Raoul, Logan, Keena; and his many, many friends.
Alvin was a journalist, and his passion for it never switched off. It shaped his early career and later carried him into media consulting.
Cycling was his release, and suiting up was half the fun. He pulled on matching lycra, head to toe, and half our photos of him are exactly that. He rode the Gatineau hills and river for years, and their beauty never wore off on him.
Music went everywhere with him, reggae above all, though he listened to everything, in his ears on every ride or on the speaker when he had control of the stereo. He loved a live show too, and never stopped checking which of his, or his grandkids’, favorite acts were coming through town.
He and Nadia were together for more than 50 years. They traveled the world side by side, and what they came home talking about was always the people they met.
He made friends everywhere he went, and he remembered what mattered to them, the names, the stories, the small details, long after most people would have forgotten. He was earnest, and he meant what he said.
More than anything, Alvin loved his family. He never missed an opportunity to share how proud he was of everyone.
We are grateful for the time we had with him, though it ended too soon. His soulful energy and his excitement for life were a gift, and his spirit will continue to live on through all of us.
The celebration of life will be held Sunday, August 30 at 1PM EST at Beechwood National Memorial Centre located at 280 Beechwood Avenue, Ottawa. For those unable to join in person may attend virtually via live stream.
