Adriaan Jacobus Erasmus Kruger, lovingly known as Jannie, was born on May 6, 1952, in Northern Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe, where his father’s work in the mining industry had taken the family. There he spent his early childhood before the family returned to South Africa and settled in Pretoria, where he grew up.

On September 8, 1973, Adriaan married Wilhelmina (Willa) Christina Kruger (née Alberts). Together they built a life centered on family, faith and home. During his early career, Adriaan served in the South African Police, including as a K9 trainer, later served in the South African military, where his career took him into the field of intelligence.

Adriaan was always full of ideas and willing to take a chance on something new. By midlife, the current carried him in a different direction. He embraced his entrepreneurial spirit and built a holiday resort from scratch on the South Coast, in KwaZulu-Natal. That same ability to see possibility extended to the people he loved. Adriaan was Willa’s rock and greatest cheerleader. In 1996, he encouraged her to pursue a career in California, opening up new opportunities for the family. That journey eventually led them to Canada, and in 2001, they called Ottawa home.

Adriaan was a man of many interests and talents. He was an avid stamp and coin collector, enjoyed fishing and writing, and loved making music. He learned to play the trumpet while serving in the police force, played in a band of his own, and continued making music with church bands in South Africa.

A homebody at heart, Adriaan was happiest with his family close by and was always ready with advice—especially in the kitchen where Willa could count on an unsolicited cooking tip or two. An excellent cook himself, he made his own biltong and drywors, baked bread, and prepared other South African favorites for the family.

Over the final year of his life, Adriaan faced Acute Myeloid Leukemia with courage and faith. Although his illness brought difficult days, his family remains deeply thankful for the additional time they were gifted by God—precious time to be together to share memories, make some new ones, and to prepare for his departure. On September 7, 2026, Adriaan passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family.

We take comfort in our faith that Adriaan has been called Home and reunited in Heaven with his eldest daughter Linda Ahmed (née Kruger), his mother Petronella (Nellie) Kruger (née Prinsloo), his father At (Atjie) Kruger, and other loved ones who went before him.

Adriaan will be lovingly remembered as devoted husband to Willa; loving father to Linda, Ronel Du Plessis (née Kruger) and Zelda Burt (née Kruger), father- in-law to Gordon Burt; and beloved grandfather to Zain and Leyhana Ahmed, Joshua Du Plessis and Olivia Isobel Diamond Burt.

Adriaan leaves us with the lessons he lived by throughout his life: love, forgive, trust that God is in control, and never forget to laugh a little. His earthly pilgrimage is now complete, but his memory, faith, humor, and guidance will live on in the family he loved so deeply.
