Thelma Robbins (née Kidd)

29 MARS 1952 31 MAI 2026

Portrait de Thelma Robbins (née Kidd)

Peacefully in Ottawa at the age of 74 after a brief but brave battle with cancer. Daughter of the late Evelyn (née Pengally) and the late Norman Kidd of Toronto, Ontario. She leaves behind her beloved husband James and three daughters, Carlie, Laura, and Sarah (Andrew) of Ottawa. Proud grandmother of Marianne, Jerome, Tyson, and Cedric. Sister to Patricia Sales (Floyd) and Lorna Novlan (the late Delbert), and loving aunt and cousin to many.

Thelma was born and raised in Toronto, and moved to London, Ontario, where she met Jim and his Fiat sports car. After moves to Goose Bay, NL, and Huntingdon, England, they settled in Ottawa to raise their children and made lifelong friends in Ottawa South and Beacon Hill. A landmark in the Ottawa quilting community, Thelma won several international and national awards, and believed that quilters gave the world hugs through fabric.

Family and friends are invited to a reception in honour of Thelma on Friday, June 5, 2026, at the Beechwood National memorial Centre, 280 Beechwood Avenue, Ottawa, from 6:00PM to 9:00PM.

If desired, memorial donations can be made to the charity of your choice.

  1. I will always remember our talks, lots of good conversations and laughs! RIP! ❤️

  2. I was so, so sorry to hear about Thelma… Her artistic creations always took my breath away. So talented! She will be missed.

  3. Honoured to be able to hold the joyful memories of Thelma Kidd, my roommate in London ON, when she/ TG met and fell in love with the dashing James Robbins (it wasn’t just the sports car that made her heart go pitter pat 💕 . ) What a love story, that grew with the birth of each beloved daughter. I know the best of her lives on in Carlie, Laura and Sarah, and that Jim’s big heart got bigger because of Thelma. Peace be with you as you navigate this immeasurable loss. Beth

  4. We are so sorry for your loss, and we will miss our talks and our laughs together, over crazy things.

  5. I will miss her so much her. Her humour, her generosity and how she was gentle and understanding. Thelma loved her family and occasionally she would share stories about them no embarrassments just love.. May she be from above..

  6. Wife Jan and Thelma were thick as thieves when it came to quilting…but Thelma was competitive and her awards for miniature quilts attested to her talent. The Robbins were close to us in the BHN neighbourhood. R I P.

  7. What a shock to lose such a lovely, vibrant person. Her quilted projects always amazed me and the whole quilting community lost a great talent.

  8. I greatly admired Thelma whom I knew through Quilting. Thelma was very warm and welcoming when I joined the “Country Club” Quilters about 15 or 20 years ago. We often exchanged photos of “impossible” quilts to make as we were both fascinated by the artistry of some quilters and geometric quilts. Thelma rose above all of us with her skills and perfection. We all celebrated her success; the group is very close knit. Thelma will be so missed. She leaves behind quite a legacy.
Sincere condolences to Jim, Carlie, Laura, Sarah and Thelma’s sisters who supported her through her short but harsh illness.

  9. Joe was a colleague of Jim and I met Thelma through Joe’s work trips. She was always so friendly and welcoming. Always a pleasure to see her and have a chat.
    Deepest condolences to the family.
    -Karen Chappell and Joe Dawson.

  10. Our family is so saddened to hear of Thelma’s passing. She was truly such a wonderful neighbour. Thelma will be deeply missed and our sincerest condolences to Jim, their girls and their families.

  11. I first met Thelma over forty years ago when Carlie and our son Andrew enrolled in the Old Ottawa South preschool. The parents have kept in touch to this day and Thelma will greatly be missed.
She was kind and a great listener and was always there to lend a helping hand. I will miss my friend and our chats over tea.

  12. I considered Thelma my mentor in the art of miniature quilt making. She generously shared her time and knowledge with me. Thank you, Thelma and rest in peace.

  13. Thelma was a cherished member of the Beacon Hill “Streetwalkers” for thirty odd years. Forever missed will be: her kindness and boundless generosity; the twinkle in her eye and her wicked sense of humour; her incredible talent and creativity; her steadfast friendship. Our deepest sympathy to Jim, Carlie, Laura, Sarah & Family.

  14. Thelma-Calm, gentle, caring, helpful, artistically creative, supremely talented, supportive, and always a lady. We met in 2011 when she welcomed me into the “Country Club Quilters”. She inspired us all and brought sunlight into the room the moment she walked in with that ever present smile on her face. I know she is in heaven with Jan, discussing how to create an even more spectacular, precise mini quilt.
Sincere condolences to the entire Robbins Family!💔

  15. So sorry to hear. Jim, I remember, in 1976, when you came back to Goose Bay and told us that you got married to Thelma. I couldn’t wait to meet her which I did during a quilt show here in Ottawa.
Mes condoléances to you and your family.

  16. Sincere condolences to Jim & the family.

  17. Our condolenses to the Robbins Family in the passing of Thelma, a Memorial Donation will be made to the Mathews House Hospice in Alliston, a Town where Grandpa Norm resided. Aunt Marie Kidd and family

  18. Thelma was one of the kindest and most positive people we have ever known.

Our friendship dates back to high school years at Downsview Secondary. Although our lives didn’t intersect too often in the decades that followed, we are grateful for those happy and memorable visits we enjoyed with her and Jim, and our respective families.

We remember and will always remember Thelma with warmth and great affection.

    Ted & Loretta Dodds

  19. Sending my deepest condolences to Jim, Carlie, Laura, Sarah and families. Thelma was always so kind, and I am so greatful that we were able to catch up a few years back during the families trip back to Buxton. Rest in Peace Aunt Thelma ❤️

  20. Dear Uncle Jim, Carlie, Laura, Sarah and families

We were heartbroken to hear of Aunt Thelma’s passing. She was such an amazing person, and I will always remember her kindness, warmth, humour, her stories, and helping me when I needed it.

One of my favourite memories is when my Mom, Aunt Thelma, and I were making all of the flower arrangements for my wedding and setting up the tables together. It was such a wonderful time filled with laughter, love, a few glasses of wine and memories I will cherish forever. Aunt Thelma helped make our day even more special, and I will always be grateful for that.❤️

Please know that you are all in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. We hope you find comfort in the many beautiful memories you shared with her and in knowing how much she was loved by so many.

    With love and deepest sympathy,

    Jeff & Colleen

  24. Thelma and I were next door neighbour’s for many years. One day in the late nineties Thelma came to my door and said she heard i took up quilting. Thelma said she needed a challenge and thought quilting could be it and asked if she could see my work. Thelma became one of the founding members of the Monday Country Quilters. A group of ladies dedicated to the art of quilting. Quilting became Thelma’s passion and her work went on to be recognized nationally and internationally by winning 1st prize whenever she entered one of her quilts. Her work was PERFECTION. Not only was she an excellent quilter but also a very kind person. She was always ready to step up and help. Many in our quilting groups can testify to that including myself. Thelma’s family and community have lost a very special person and she will be missed by all. She will always be in our memory and no doubt & will be our inspiration in quilting and giving a helping hand in difficult situations.
