Portrait de Patrick Caverhill Beatty

The hearts of Patrick Beatty’s family and friends were broken by his sudden death in an automobile accident that took his life and left his bride of four days in hospital.

Patrick’s life story is of a person who inspired joy in everyone he met. His intelligence, his love, his loyalty, and his spirit of fun gave him a special gift for making and keeping lifelong friends.

He spent his early days in Fergus before moving to Ottawa in 1995, where he attended high school at Ashbury College. Ashbury introduced Patrick to the close-knit group of friends who would remain an important part of his life, many of whom became familiar faces in the Beatty household. It also fostered a lifelong passion for learning. It was at Ashbury that Patrick discovered his love of the dramatic arts and creative writing, interests that, for a time, inspired dreams of becoming a film director.

He earned his undergraduate degree at Western University in London and a Master of Public Policy at the University of Calgary. Driven by his insatiable curiosity, he achieved his target of reading one hundred books on a wide range of topics in a single year. At the time of his death, he was over halfway through an MBA from Dalhousie University.

Patrick was nineteen when his beloved older brother, Christopher, died in a motorcycle accident in Thailand. Losing Christopher taught Patrick about the fragility of life, the importance of relationships, and the need to use our time to make a difference. He promoted organ donation and became active in politics to contribute to his country and community. He respected anyone who made a similar commitment regardless of political belief.

Patrick’s career was more than a job. It was also a mission. He focused on the Canadian energy sector, first with Suncor Energy in Calgary and most recently with Pattern Energy in Toronto, where his responsibilities included fostering relationships between the energy sector and Canada’s Indigenous peoples. He had a book on the topic with him at the time of his accident.

The happiest days of Patrick’s life came just before his death. On Saturday, September 19, he married Nabiha Paracha in a beautiful outdoor ceremony overlooking Lake Muskoka. Nabiha was the star Patrick’s solar system orbited around; he was filled with joy whenever he was with her, and she inspired him always to be his best. The wedding allowed them to share their utmost happiness with friends and family, many of whom had travelled long distances to celebrate with them.

On the Monday following the wedding, Patrick and Nabiha made an offer on a home in Muskoka, looking forward to welcoming their many friends. It was the realization of a longstanding dream. Two days later, they set out for Ottawa, where Patrick was excited to reunite with his Ashbury classmates for their twenty-year reunion. Tragically, he never arrived.

Patrick leaves an unfillable void in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be especially missed by Nabiha, his parents (Julia and Perrin Beatty) and the extended Beatty and Paracha families.

A celebration of Patrick’s life will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 17 in the Great Hall at Ashbury College in Ottawa, following which he will be laid to rest in Beechwood Cemetery beside his brother, Christopher.

For those wishing to commemorate Patrick’s life, the Patrick Caverhill Beatty ’06 Memorial Fund has been established at Ashbury College.

  48. We loved Patrick as we did Christopher. His wedding to Nabiha was the most beautiful and the happiest of days. His death, sudden and so soon, a tragedy we could not have imagined, and yet, we all now have to accept. We pray you find solace in friendship, love and the memory of just how super Patrick was. We send our love to Nabiha, Perrin, Julia and the extended family so cruelly hurt by this. Patrick and Christopher will forever be in our hearts. Sending our deepest love. Marianne and David

  49. Dear Perrin, I am very sorry to learn about Patrick’s passing. He was a friend in university and I remember travelling to represent Canada together in London. He was kind and generous and a very fun-loving guy. We will sincerely miss him and I’m extremely sorry for your loss. Wishing you and your family peace during this time.

  50. I am so sorry to hear of Patrick’s passing. Patrick was a most honorable man, filled with integrity, talent, and humility. His easy going, down-to-earth nature made for an easy friend to many. I’ll always be thankful for his friendship and encouragement. He was a gem of a person. My deepest condolences.

  51. I met Patrick when we were neighbours in the student residence at the CÉGEP de Jonquière in summer 2005. We had both overslept and missed the bus for what would have been a grueling hiking trip. He heard my boombox playing in an otherwise empty building, knocked on my door and said « let’s go get lunch. » I was impressed by how little an excuse he needed to make a new friend. My deepest condolences to the Beatty and Paracha families.

  52. I taught Patrick in grade six. What a positive, kind and fun-loving boy he was. I have fond memories of him and his classmates. We are not promised tomorrow but this is quite brutal. I am sending my deepest condolences to Mr. and Mrs. Beatty as they have to face the loss of a second son. My heart goes out to them, his new wife and their families and friends as they face this tragedy. Repose en paix Patrick.

  53. Perrin and Julie My deepest sympathy.
    Ron Morrison

  54. Oh Julie!! What sad news. My deepest condolences to you and yours.

  55. Some children just announce themselves when they enter the world .From Day One, when I was delighted to first make his acquaintance ,Patrick was one of those children whom we knew would be very special. Smart ,ready to take on the world with confidence and above all , always kind to others . We saw this quality first hand as he spent time with our children in his younger years . Always a natural peace maker and accepting of others as he found them . It was no wonder that Patrick grew up to be the fine and caring young man that he became . Such a source of pride for Julie and Perrin. Words are helpless to describe our sadness upon hearing of his unspeakable loss to his lovely bride, Nabiha , his parents and family .We can only hope that they may take some small measure of comfort from the love and support of their family and many friends . All of whom would do anything to take away their pain if they had the agency to do so. You are all in our hearts as you seek peace in the difficult days ahead .

  56. Dear Beatty Family and Nabiha,

He had a gift for making an impact in every room he walked into, always leading with integrity, humor, and a genuine heart. It was a privilege to know him and witness the massive footprint he left in his time with us at Pattern Energy. Sending my deepest, most heartfelt condolences to his wife Nabiha, his parents, and his many friends and colleagues during this unimaginably difficult time. Rest in peace, Patrick.

  63. Dear Perrin and Julia: Patrick sounds like an extraordinary young man who brought so much joy, purpose and goodness into the world. Knowing you, I am not surprised that you raised such a remarkable son. Please know that you are both in my thoughts and prayers as you face this excruciating grief, and that I am holding Nabiha close in my prayers as well. My husband and I are heartbroken for your loss.

  64. Perrin and family. I will keep you all in my prayers in the weeks ahead. This was a beautiful tribute to your son.

  65. I worked with Patrick several years ago in Calgary. I had the chance to talk with him about a wide range of subjects — and while we didn’t always agree, I admired his intelligence, humour, and engaging way of approaching a conversation. I haven’t seen him in years, but have followed his updates on LinkedIn and was impressed by the kinds of things I saw him doing and caring about.

The world has experienced a significant loss with this tragic accident, and I can only hope that the same qualities that made Patrick great are also the ones that bring comfort and good memories to his family and friends.

  66. Perrin – I am so sorry to hear of your loss. With great sadness, I extend condolences, thoughts and prayers to you and Julie at this unimaginably difficult time.

  74. I was a classmate of Patrick’s at Dalhousie – he was incredibly friendly and a student with so much promise. In the winter semester, he was so excited about his wedding and talked about plans with his fiancé at length with us during breaks. I’m so sorry that your time with him was cut short.
