Margaret D. Swift (nee Shumaker)

Margaret passed away peacefully on July 13, 2026 at the age of 90.

Lovingly remembered by her husband of 69 years, David Swift, sons Dave (Joanne), Bill (Terri-Ann) and Brian (Karolyn). Grandmother to David (Desirée), Emily (James), Megan (Matthew) and Kyra (Haydn).  She was to be a Great Grandmother this October.  Predeceased by her parents Henry and Hazel Shumaker and siblings Marion, Bill, Hilda, Minnie, Carl, Violet and Laura.  Fondly remembered by nieces and nephews in BC and Alberta.

Margaret grew up in rural Alberta and lived through the depression. She moved to Lethbridge at the age of 14 to seek employment and start forging her own life.  She joined the air force at 18.  A few years later she met the love of her life, Dave.

They were stationed in Canada, U.S. and Europe. They started a family and eventually settled in Ottawa. Once their youngest was in school full time she started working at Loblaws, eventually went back to school and successfully enjoyed a career in the public service.  After retirement she was offered a position to work on the National Defense help line which she enjoyed for a few more years.

Cremation has taken place. Graveside service to be held at Beechwood Cemetery, 280 Beechwood Ave Ottawa, on Tuesday July 21, 2026 at 11:00am
