Portrait de Lawrence “Larry” Delaney

Larry Delaney, the revered voice of Canadian country music and beloved family patriarch, passed away peacefully on June 4, 2026, at the age of 83. Born on August 30, 1942, in Ottawa, Ontario, Larry spent his lifetime elevating others, leaving an indelible mark on both his community and the national music landscape.

Larry was best known as the passionate (co)-founder, owner, and publisher of Country Music News, which was launched in 1980. For over three decades, his Ottawa-based publication served as the ultimate authority for the Canadian country music industry. Larry was a tireless champion of home-grown talent, charting the careers of Canadian legends and undiscovered independent artists alike. His monumental contributions and unwavering dedication to the genre were officially recognized in 1989 when he was inducted into the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame, along with several other recognitions including 11-time recipient of the CCMA’s country music person of the year award. Larry, along with his wife, Joanne, who was along the journey with him for all 332 issues of Country Music News, were inducted into the Ottawa Valley Country Music Hall of Fame together in 1993.

While his professional legacy is permanently etched into Canadian music history, Larry’s greatest pride was his family. He was a deeply devoted husband, father, and grandfather who filled his home with warmth, humor, and endless support.

He is survived by his loving wife Joanne Delaney, his devoted daughter Kenni-Jo (KJ) Delaney, his proud son, Kirk Delaney, daughter-in-law Kimberly and his cherished grandchildren, Kailee, Ashlee, and Logan.

Larry’s sharp wit, encyclopedic musical knowledge, and generous spirit will be profoundly missed by his family, lifelong friends, and the countless musicians whose careers he helped build.

  15. I am at once speechless and yet filled with superlatives to describe my friend and keenly adept music journalist and music fan, Larry Delaney. I remember fondly chatting with him in the mid and late 90’s from my home near Victoria when I landing my first top 40 and then top 20 and top 10 Country radio hits. When I moved to Saskatoon in 2003 after winning my second CCMA I stayed in touch and was honoured that several if not all my albums were on Delaney’s Dozen top albums over the years. I was so glad I could get to visit with him in August of 2025 for a couple hours of catching up and looking back. My condolences and o all that knew Larry especially his family whom he was so proud of. May you rest in peace Larry, thank you again for your time, friendship, honesty and support. Sincerely Sean Hogan

RIP and may your next journey be filled with love, peace, and happiness.
