It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Karen Lee Hines (née Sovran) on August 12, 2026, surrounded by her loving family.

Karen was the devoted mother of Geoffrey Hines (Penny Waite) and Emily Hines (Benoit-Michel Saumur), and the cherished Grandma of Charlotte and Rosalie. She was the treasured daughter of Allan Americo and Milly Sovran, and the beloved big sister of Shelley Reynolds, David Sovran (Ann), and brother-in-law Steve Challinor. She was Aunt Karen to many nieces and nephews. Karen was predeceased by her sisters Kerry Sovran and Carla Sovran, as well as her brother-in-law Dave Reynolds.

Born in Windsor, Ontario, Karen’s adventurous spirit took her all over the world with her military family and through her love of travel. A dedicated registered nurse, and always the caregiver, her career spanned emergency rooms, geriatrics and palliative care. She was a respected leader and a lifelong learner.  Karen was a talented crafter, creating works of art in the form of clothing, baby quilts, and cozy toques. She was a strong woman, surviving breast cancer with grace and humor.

Karen created a home filled with warmth, laughter, and unconditional love—a gathering place for her family and friends. We are forever grateful for the memories, the celebrations, the ordinary days, and the expressions of love that wove her family together.  Karen’s generosity of spirit made her the heart of the family; she welcomed everyone and made friends with ease, spreading joy wherever she went. Always in style, often in pink, and forever the optimist, Karen/ Mom/ Grandma will be deeply missed by all those who were fortunate enough to know her.

In lieu of flowers the family kindly requests that donations be sent to your local food bank, or the Ottawa Food Bank  (Donate – Ottawa Food Bank)

Livre d'or numérique

  1. Sending sincere condolences for the loss of your mom and grandmother. You are in my thoughts during this difficult time.
    Teresa Clow

  2. We are so very sorry for your loss. I wish there were words to capture how absolutely wonderful Karen was. I close my eyes and hear her laugh; memories as a 10 year old are as real as her hilarious tidbits at your wedding (only Stewart and I were privy to that memory), to holding and loving my babies. I will miss her.

  3. So very sorry for your loss. I will forever cherish the memories of Karen, Lynn and I in Cuba, going back well over 20 years.
