Campers know to leave the campsite in a better condition than they found it. The world was Ellen’s camp site. And she spent her life trying to leave it in a better condition than she found it.
From a young age, Ellen was passionate about the outdoors. She loved nature, took her kids camping every chance she could get and loved nothing more than to spend hours sitting next to – or on – Canada’s lakes and rivers. She was an avid Guide leader, a keen protector of her local habitats and a dedicated recycler and reuser.
Her pride and joy were her kids – Salvador, Soraia and Imogen. She raised them with the same respect for nature, compassion for humankind and desire to help those around them. She gave them creativity, encouragement and opportunities to explore their passions. And she loved them fiercely – holding them close into her last minute.
Whether as a daughter, a sister, a mother or a friend, Ellen was always loyal, caring and thoughtful. Her first thought was always of you. She remembered your stories. She celebrated your wins. She supported you through your dark times. She let you know that you mattered. She was the kind of person you knew you could count on – no matter what.
She used her unique perspectives and her life experiences to show other people a better world. Whether through her camara lens, her written word or her tireless support of cancer research and the wider community, she used her creativity to help people thrive in the world around them.
Ellen didn’t just spend her life trying to leave the campsite in a better condition than she found it – her focus was on leaving the world in a better place. And through her actions, her passion, her love and her legacy, she did exactly that.
The world is a better place because of Ellen. And we are better people for having known her.
