Surrounded by the love of her family, Helgard Hyman passed away on the morning of September 7, 2026.
She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Major David Hyman; her daughters, Lisa, with Sergio and Sebastian, and Sophie, with Niklas and Julian; and her brother, Reinhard, with Connie.
Helgard loved the worlds of culture, art and languages. Holding two master’s degrees in French Literature and Linguistics, she travelled extensively and shared her knowledge with dedication as a French language teacher (Fredericton High School) and German language teacher (De La Salle Secondaire). Helgard was also deeply creative, leaving behind a home filled with stained glass that she designed and created, as well as textiles that she knit. With a lifelong soprano vocal range, Helgard was a member of the Elmer Iseler Singers, the Bielefeld Stadt Choir and the Ottawa Choral Society.
Helgard was as charismatic and kind as she was talented and beautiful.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Rural Ottawa South Support Services (ROSSS), The Humane Society of Ottawa or The Dementia Society of Ottawa.
A celebration of Helgard’s life will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, October 30, in the Sacred Space at Beechwood Funeral, Cemetery and Cremation Services, 280 Beechwood Avenue, Ottawa. Family and friends are invited to visit from 1 p.m. A reception will follow.
