Raised in Deep River and resident of Ottawa, she passed away peacefully on November 5, 2026, following a courageous journey with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) and aphasia. She was lovingly cared for by her husband of 60 years, Roy, and was surrounded by her children and grandchildren. Jane was the daughter of the late Janet Elizabeth Mary (Scobie) and Hubert Smedley.

Jane led an eventful life, and her adventurous spirit had her and the family join husband Roy on UN missions and postings that took her to England, Damascus, Jerusalem, Germany, Pakistan, and many parts of Canada. Jane brought the comforts of home to   each destination, hosting visitors and forging lasting bonds in each community. She was an accomplished seamstress, furniture refinisher, DIY specialist, and adept at preparing multi-course meals or family dinners.

She will be remembered as the beloved wife of Roy Thomas and the loving mother of Michael Thomas and his wife, Sandra, of Kanata; Megan Fox and her husband, Dan, of Nepean; and Rob Thomas and his wife, Leana Van der Vliet, of Ottawa. She was the cherished grandmother of James, Susie, and Jonny Fox; Kayden Thomas; and Hannan, Gabe, and Josie Thomas.

Jane is survived by her brother, Jim Smedley; her brothers-in-law, Michael (Christine), John (Juanita), Paul (Carole), Gerry (Carol), Ian, Martin (Nancy), Peter, Chris (Kirsti), and Neal (Sharon); as well as many cherished nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her brother, Robert Smedley; her sister, Gillian Mark; and her brother-in-law, Stephen.

Jane will also be deeply missed by the many extended family members and connections she maintained through her passion for genealogy.

A Memorial Service will be held at Beechwood Funeral, Cemetery and Cremation Service, 280 Beechwood Ave on Tuesday November 17, 2026. Visitation from 11:00am-1:00pm, Celebration of life 1:00pm followed by Interment and Reception.

In memory of Jane, donations to a charity of your choice would be gratefully appreciated.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Beechwood Cemetery and Funeral Services.
